Been plugging away at small stuff. Too cold to go out in the garage and tackle the body.
I got all the latch hardware located, cleaned and ready for re-install. I cut out new door cards and ordered the green metalflake vinyl for the interior inserts. I also found a pair of "Z" armrests that I am thinking of using. Need to decide what I am doing for the interior door release handle still.
I have also decided to go ahead and use the grey leather I have for the interior. It will go great with the green metalflake vinyl, plus I already have it. That decision did cause me to rethink the exterior color. As much as I liked the Safari Beige with the green metalflake roof, it just won't go with the grey and green interior. Plus I couldn't find a tan or other color for the interior that I liked.
So...I am going to go with a shiny light grey exterior. Will look something like this...
Thinking about using TCP Global's Mesa Grey...

For the record, the license plate light housing is from a 50-51 Plymouth.
However, the rear bumper did indeed start out as a 49 Merc front bumper. |

I completed the rear quarter panel trim cards this weekend. Same basic design and procedure as with the door cards.
I even through a couple of the panel clips on and put them in the car...
I like it! Of course, I still have to steam out the wrinkles and modify the door handle strap that hooks to the inner door sheetmetal. Getting close though. _________________ Later,

Started on the modifications to the front beam for the air ride tonight. Mostly just getting metal out of the way for the control horns and bags and such...
I also tried doing a little turning on the splined stub axle. It is hard stuff, but it did turn down. I need to get it down to a press fit inside the trailing arms.
I will be adding a brace back in to replace the lower tube that I cut away. Don;t want to go to all the trouble to stick with teh heavier Type 3 parts and then compromise the strength of the beam housing. _________________ Later,

Thanks. It is time to get back at this project. I got side tracked by a motorcycle project for a couple months. But now that that is back on the road....it is Sled time!
The timing is great too...Jill is going out of town the last week of August. Lots of Sled time that week. _________________ Later,

Got back to the Sled today....at least a little bit.
First I cleaned it all off. I had been using the hood and roof as a flat surface and had way too much crap piled on them. So I get the tools put away and the parts re-stashed, and the garage thrown out.
Then I got the shift rod and bushing reinstalled along with teh coupler to the transmission. I also got the shifter with the short throw kit installed.
Small steps, but progress none the less. It felt good. _________________ Later,

Spent a few hours on the Sled today.
I got the headlight trim rings trimmed to fit inside the eyebrows on the fender. I decided to go with the stock (just trimmed) rings and headlight location rather than the inverted trim rings and recessed headlights like I was originally thinking. I think they work nicely.
I also welded up the last few holes and did some hammer and dolly work and some grinding on various spots. The front fenders are now ready for some acid etch and then a quote of MasterSeries on the inside and epoxy sealer on the outside. Then then it will be muddin' time....at least for the front fenders.
Here are a few pictures....

Mud, really? I thought this was a lead sled? Get out the paddles, files & torch, show the old timers some respect & teach the youngins some skills.
Great looking job John, I am so looking forward to seeing it in person.
On a side note, I worked at a shop & the boss used to work at a restoration shop that did all metal work, no fillers. The guys in the shop used to call lead workers butchers. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Mud & Lead are both fillers, so I don't see that much difference. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Mud is usually the name for body fillers of the polyester variety. Lead sleds were known for all the filler work to be done in lead fillers. With all the lead type poisoning out there the manufacturers have come up with a more "friendly" product. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |
