I've got two tents. One for camping for a week or so and an awning for weekend jaunts. The modern one I like because it's aligned along the length of the bus as opposed to sticking out at right angles. It's big but not too big. The awning I like because it looks great! The pick of the awning was the sales pick and not a pic of my bus.

UK doesn't have seasons: in summer you can get storms, in winter you get days when you can sunbathe.
Unfortunately, no-one knows how to predict them ... |

Here's a really bad photo of our side tent.
I bought this at a sporting good store on clearance for $100. It is supposed to be used to wrap around the back of an SUV and "cinch" tight. It has a tube/umbilica that it is supposed to connect with the SUV by wrapping around the tail of the SUV. But all I did was got a box of binder clips (you know...like black metal clips for holding together lots of papers). I just clipped the umbilica all around the "doorway" of my bus to hold it. When I got finished, it was mosquito proof. That was supposed to be a "get me camping" method of installing it, but it worked so well I don't have the desire to do anything else at future campouts.
The thing erects in literally a couple minutes, and it has a canvas floor built into it. You can stake it down, but I find that after I put all my crap inside it...ice buckets, clothes boxes, etc., I don't worry about it blowing away.
It was so nice to get everything out of the bus! I put all that junk in a circle around the inside of the tent so we could still walk through it and we used it as a changing areaa t the beach. I also had toddlers, so I left a "potty chair" there. Once could keep a portapotty there too...at the far end away from the sleeping area. I also clipped a cloth over the opening to help hold the A/C inside the bus. With my A/C cranking, it was like being at the Holiday Inn inside the bus and no ballet moves were needed for a few people to maneuver around at bedtime. During the day, all the beds were folded back, and we had no need for a picnic table because there is room to eat inside the bus, or just go in there and cool down (in the A/C).

Since the topic of this thread is modern side tent and after scouring the searches for the ArcHaus brand tent that GoWesty supplies, I have to ask: has anyone used this tent and have any comment to it? I've got a '68 tin Westy that after failing to camp with my wife, my 4 year old and my 2 year old, we've decided we need another sleeping space. Attached to the bus and bug-proof would be the ultimate, but unless we find something good (not too big, easy up/down, inexpensive, etc) we might just have to put up the pup tent near the bus. BusDepot's newest side tent looks good, but maybe a bit too big for us. I saw GoWesty's ArcHaus brand, and it seems like the right idea at least for us, just haven't seen anyone mention it. _________________ '70 Karmann Ghia *SOLD* Grrr!

I've also been intrigued by this tent for the last year or so. It really seems like the best compromise between size/utility that I've seen anywhere. I'd love to read some real world feedback on it before committing, too.

Any help identifying this monstrosity?? It came along with my bus, and the PO couldnt remember the make, or how to set it up. Its just sitting in storage waiting to be awakened. Any help would be appreciated, i wanna take it along to a festival in June. _________________ Can it wait till Im old.. Can I live while Im young

we don't use a tent but if we did, the easiest solution would be ask a local car upholstery shop what they would charge to build a portal between the bus and a tent then find a tent that matched the material and minimum size they recommended.
We took care of the problem in the 1970's by getting a really lightweight tent trailer and taking it along. Lots of room between the two and storage space when traveling too. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

As far as identifying your tent try reading page 2 of this same post, grandfatherjim shows his Spacemaker there.
I own one too, I recall we got it at Bus Depot for 300 bucks.....
I will check for instructions. _________________ 1979 Riviera Poptop - 1.8L VW 93' Fox watercooled

We use this pop-up decathlon tent the most. Great for when there are just 2 of us and the dogs. It literally pops up in a few seconds and if the wind gets a bit crazy, it just flexes. It also sits nice against the bus.
I've never really felt the need to be attached like a proper awning
But if we are expecting company we have a few larger tents that get used

Yes I am aware I'm reviving an old thread, but isn't that better than a new one?
I read through the thread, but I'm still unsure what would suit us best. It's my wife and I and 2 dogs in a 68 Campmobile.
We expect a wide range of conditions, so we want the versatility of having screen/mesh walls to keep mosquitoes out and let the breeze in, but also able to batten down if the weather gets cold or wet.
The tent will be used long term for a couple years at least. We will often camp in one place for weeks, so we want it to go up and down easy, ie not a lot of stakes needed, but can add them if there is strong wind.
As to a floor, I'd prefer to not have one. As long as the walls come to the ground, we are fine with putting down a piece of tyvek as our groundcloth.
I would like something to go between the ground and the bottom of the van too, but I have the skills, if not the time, to sew something myself if needed.
Durability/cost is far more important than cost, but recognize the relationship between the two.
I know tough list. They are pretty much in order of importance. Any specific recommendations?
The last time I outfitted for an extended trip was a thru hike of the PCT, so I keep picturing ultra light DIY solutions. LOL
Great discussion. Nice to read others' experiences to help know what features are important to me. _________________ ~Kevin

Hikelite, I think it might be tough to get the best of both worlds here. You want a full side tent with screens and a floor but you also want it to be light and compact. Side tents are awesome but they are big, bulky, heavy and can take Some time to assemble. I have a SpaceSaver tent and I really like it. It's great for camping in the same spot for several days, like a festival. It has windows with screens and roll up windows, a nice sized door and no floor. At first I was bummed it didn't have a floor, but I really don't mined it. Two of the walls open up and one becomes an awning. It also stands alone so you could drive away and leave it. I paid $200 for mine used (maybe once, it still had the tags on it), and for that price I'm extremely happy with it.
I have a Thule box on my bus and the tent takes up most of the space. On short trips we take a EZup. It's easy to store and set up. I bet you could find a awning that has attachable walls that's smaller.
Walls open and the awning out at Jerome Jamboree '14
Walls down at the Four Corners Folk Fest '15. It rained most of the time, we stayed nice and dry.

Hikelite,
I bought an orange and grey attaching side tent from JustKampers and I think it's great.
http://www.justkampers.com/2016-camping-sale?utm_s...529eb194b0
It's probably the same manufacturer as Bus Depot but you get different color options. I thought I'd mention their products in case you want some more choice. Careful to select the correct LHD model code when ordering as some descriptive text on the site doesn't match up.
Most importantly they have a huge sale going on right now, and with the Brexit exchange rate advantage their products might be worth looking at? I didn't find shipping so much that it kept me from getting the orange color I wanted.
The outwell and easy camp products (also available from other UK sellers) are a good in-between size/weight option.
All of the products are "modern" and as strong and light as possible from my past research.
I previously bought the GoWesty green tent but I don't think it has enough options to secure it as well as may be needed IMO. I'm keeping it for other light weight uses like a shady camping house for my dog to romp in. It gets points for being very small and compact when packaged up - not much bigger than a few logs of firewood.
I also wanted something separate to cover a picnic table, like 8 X 12 size, but still have rain protection, privacy option, and good bug protection, so I bought a lightweight rectangle camping tent with a high roof and cut the floor out. Now I can assemble it right over the picnic table with room to walk around the table. I can adjust the flaps for privacy or to keep rain out which is more practical than just using a screen house. Just though I'd mention that idea too.
Happy tent shopping! _________________ 1977 Westfalia "Happy"
