Yeah I agree, but since this is "The Samba" one tends to be gun shy of purist retribution. _________________ Introducing the Basilari 306R.. A low light Ghia, performance chassis and 300HP boxer six.

On most other forums when posting up in threads were it is asked what wheel are you running the customary response is with information that is useful.
pictures of your setup
manufacturer
name of wheel
size of wheels
back spacing/offset
tire size and manufacturer
any issues with rubbing
suspension type and any lowering and how
this might actually stop the constant request for information that is never given |
Amen to that but I'm afraid you're flogging a dead horse on that one. |
...and the fact that many of us just don't know. I certainly don't. _________________ 1973 Karmann Ghia Convertible |

Hi guys,
Thought I'll post some crappy pics of my new set of Porsche Flat Face Phonedials. These are a rare version which was made for 1 year. They are 15x5inch 67mm offset and 15x7inch 67mm offset rear. They wheels originally came 7 inch wide for front and back but I happen to find someone who professionally narrowed the front wheels to 5 inch wide. I got him to polish it up too. For now I've left the fuchs on the right hand side and these wheels on the left hand side. I drove it and the car handles fine as the tyres size are the same for both side. Here are some pics.
Pat
Here is the pic with the fuchs which is still on the right hand side. |

There not on yet....but a full set of 5 Formula Vee Mags, polished faces. The wheel that's not polished is now.

Just a thought, have you checked the front calliper clearance on the Formula Vee wheels? I seem to remember something in the dim distant past about the early Riviera wheels having calliper clearance issues, not sure if these are the same wheels but they look very similar. They do look good though _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

Havent check that yet, although these are for the 914 and are ET40's.....still getting it sorted out for a real test drive. I have spacers if I need them. _________________ Chuck in Socal

Nice job Pat...I didnt know about flatface teledials...I like what youve done here (such as the narrowing)...and thats coming from someone who hasnt warmed to teledials before. Sharp Ghia _________________ -StockRocks- |

Thanks StockRocks,
Personally I didn't narrowed the wheels myself. I knew of a guy in Sydney Australia who is the only few people in Australia that can do it professionally. The wheels came in standard at 7 inch wide however the offset is 67+ which means the lip tucks behind the face slightly so I knew that it will fit the rear with no problem considering mine is a long axle 67 model. The guy took two inches off the middle barrel in the centre and made sure that it matched up perfectly , welded it and sealed it so there is no chance of air escaping. The wheels were properly machined off and welded to make sure that it was well balanced. When I took it to a tyre place the guy mounting the tyres said there was hardly any balancing he needed to do and did not even noticed the wheels were narrowed. Beside from that the wheels were polished and I added an aluminium Porsche badge on the centre cap to break it up a little. Overall I am happy with the wheels. I do however prefer the fuchs but everyone has them so that's why I left the fuchs on one side and the tele on the other side. Since I am running the same set of tyres for both side I didn't experience any issue in term of handling. I do cruise and not drive the car hard to notice any difference in handling. |

Has anyone tried this guy's wheels?

Apparently he can build stock 4 or 5 lug wheels from 5.5" to 10" width. I'd really like to go to a wider wheel for better handling, while keeping a stock look. I'm curious the quality if anyone's tried them. And also, how wide you went. _________________ Currently own:

Man -- I wish this guy had been around when I was wanting stock looking wheels for my Oval -- Oh Well, I would say look for any feedback on the guy -- He pretty much tells you what will fit and what won't -- _________________ Remember, as you travel the highway of life,

I think his size references he lists are for beetles. Not sure how that compares to Ghias. It'd be nice to know the offset, or at least how much in each direction the widening happens.
But he pictures 7" wide smoothies on what looks like an early 60's short axle Ghia. Am I correct in my understanding that IRS gives me the same rear clearance as short swing axle? I'd love to get 7" wides on the rear of my 74 with a little bit of tire tucked under the fender…maybe an 1" lower than stock or so. _________________ Currently own:
