Yeah I agree, but since this is "The Samba" one tends to be gun shy of purist retribution.

We use this on another forum and it is very helpful.
Just a suggestion is all

(please provide your wheel/tire information)

This purpose of this informational thread is to be a one stop shop for all Karmann ghia owners interested in wheel/tire information as it relates to the Kamann Ghia models. There are plenty of threads to search through, but this will help make things very easy.

Please copy and paste the template below and input your details on your current setup along with two or three pics. I know this may take some time, but your input can really help folks out!

Lets try to keep this thread clean and streamlined as much as possible by only posting new posts with the template and answers. If you have additional questions that are not answered within the user's post, please PM them directly, or if they have a link contained within their signature block, please use that.

This is designed to help fellow forum users learn more about all the different setups available out there..what works well, what required additional work, what to keep in mind when getting ready to buy wheels etc.

Perhaps the mods can make this thread a sticky to make this info even easier for folks to find.

Please Copy and Paste this template into a new reply post (not Quote) and complete for your vehicle

This thread is a sticky: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=433753

Whilst I do think this kind of information is very useful this sort template style collection of information is only as good as people's willingness to complete it.

We have this Tyre Survey template but nobody has added information since 2010...you can't force people to complete them: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=386917

You can start a new topic with a title of e.g. Ghia Wheel Size Survey and copy and paste your information template. I'll post a link in the "Suspension – Lower, Raise, Narrow – Tire, Wheel Combinations" sticky.

pictures of your setup

manufacturer

name of wheel

size of wheels

back spacing/offset

tire size and manufacturer

any issues with rubbing

suspension type and any lowering and how

this might actually stop the constant request for information that is never given

Amen to that but I'm afraid you're flogging a dead horse on that one. Sad

...and the fact that many of us just don't know. I certainly don't.

Hi guys,

Thought I'll post some crappy pics of my new set of Porsche Flat Face Phonedials. These are a rare version which was made for 1 year. They are 15x5inch 67mm offset and 15x7inch 67mm offset rear. They wheels originally came 7 inch wide for front and back but I happen to find someone who professionally narrowed the front wheels to 5 inch wide. I got him to polish it up too. For now I've left the fuchs on the right hand side and these wheels on the left hand side. I drove it and the car handles fine as the tyres size are the same for both side. Here are some pics.

Just a thought, have you checked the front calliper clearance on the Formula Vee wheels? I seem to remember something in the dim distant past about the early Riviera wheels having calliper clearance issues, not sure if these are the same wheels but they look very similar. They do look good though Smile

Thanks StockRocks,

Personally I didn't narrowed the wheels myself. I knew of a guy in Sydney Australia who is the only few people in Australia that can do it professionally. The wheels came in standard at 7 inch wide however the offset is 67+ which means the lip tucks behind the face slightly so I knew that it will fit the rear with no problem considering mine is a long axle 67 model. The guy took two inches off the middle barrel in the centre and made sure that it matched up perfectly , welded it and sealed it so there is no chance of air escaping. The wheels were properly machined off and welded to make sure that it was well balanced. When I took it to a tyre place the guy mounting the tyres said there was hardly any balancing he needed to do and did not even noticed the wheels were narrowed. Beside from that the wheels were polished and I added an aluminium Porsche badge on the centre cap to break it up a little. Overall I am happy with the wheels. I do however prefer the fuchs but everyone has them so that's why I left the fuchs on one side and the tele on the other side. Since I am running the same set of tyres for both side I didn't experience any issue in term of handling. I do cruise and not drive the car hard to notice any difference in handling.

Has anyone tried this guy's wheels?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1172589
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1470031

Apparently he can build stock 4 or 5 lug wheels from 5.5" to 10" width. I'd really like to go to a wider wheel for better handling, while keeping a stock look. I'm curious the quality if anyone's tried them. And also, how wide you went.

Man -- I wish this guy had been around when I was wanting stock looking wheels for my Oval -- Oh Well, I would say look for any feedback on the guy -- He pretty much tells you what will fit and what won't --

I think his size references he lists are for beetles. Not sure how that compares to Ghias. It'd be nice to know the offset, or at least how much in each direction the widening happens.

But he pictures 7" wide smoothies on what looks like an early 60's short axle Ghia. Am I correct in my understanding that IRS gives me the same rear clearance as short swing axle? I'd love to get 7" wides on the rear of my 74 with a little bit of tire tucked under the fender…maybe an 1" lower than stock or so.
