Spent the better part of a Sunday getting the greaseball of a 40 horse extracted from the bus and pulling foam out from everywhere. We actually had fun doing it.
As a side note, the interior panels were held on by at least 500 hex drywall screws

coincidentally my buddy in Seattle spent time taking the foam out of our find this weekend. You think you have foam everywhere.

So the Dromy's engine leaks a bit of oil... like who has a forkin vw aircooled engine that DOESN'T!!!
While I could and should make a effort to better seal it, that just cannot happen in the crunch time left before the Twin Lakes trip coming up. While I prolly be taking caboose on the caravan, pulling the trailer and such, just in case I figured a way to at least mitigate the "oil-leak-on-the-muffler-misting" issue. If not just to prevent that mist from falling on whoever is following me, at least it should keep it from spotting the crap out of the back of the bus. You all know what I'm talking about here.
The most annoying leak is coming out of the push rod tubes on the 3-4 head. After a good half hour at my first attempt at that ended up in failure, decided to stop that and move to the second phase, BIG "oil leak catch tin" for the whole engine. Once I got that figured out, it dawned on me to "match" that for the heads! So I created sleds that should drive the leak away from the header.
Here's the pix:
The "catch all" tin.
This was the main source of the mist, a leak right on the very hot J-tube.
The other side.

Removed the dangling 12v power outlet that used to get caught in the deck lid when I closed the engine compartment and replaced it with a solid-mounted 12v outlet. |

Started to look it over more closely and figure out where to start on my new '63 single cab project. Attempted to make an operable gas gauge but P/O had painted the tank sender and all, so no joy yet. Also cleaned a pound or so of dirt from the drivers side rear corner.
Looking forward to many more hours of wrenching and driving pleasure, and a few busted knuckles. |

got a good sun burn today color sanding and buffing, only did the driver's side. I look like a ripe tomato right now, but the 45 year old repaint really shined up well.

Ya I should, it's in the shade of the shop building until about 11am. color sanding took off the rust stains running down the nose. I kind of wanted to leave it but buffing removed it too. I'm trying to sale the bus right now but having second thoughts I think in the next couple weeks I'll weld in the rear wheel arches and rockers and blend them in then stick a motor in. And drive it until my big project is done. |
