my buddy was looking through a Street Rod magazine from about 1989 and came across this pic from the salt flats in Bonneville. in the background you can see a Beetle, but check out the quarter window. looks kinda odd does'nt it. i do not believe i've ever seen one like this. does anybody know what is up with this car. was it a one off modified custom by some individual? some rare Beetle body style? or maybe a coach built body that may have been produced in some number other than 1?
just looking for any info on this car or this body style. my buddy said he had looked at that mag and that pic hundreds of times over the years and never noticed the back of that Bug till the other day.
if you look close it appears to have a split rear window as well.

i figured if any place had the people who would be able to ID this car it was this place.

thanks

It looks like the 1952 Stoll Coupe', (which is now owned by
Volkswagen AG) but I suspect that this car is a custom from the '60s or later.
Note the windshield size and the vent- wing doors, lack of crotch-coolers, lack of sunroof, etc.

I referenced Keith Seume's book, "Beetle" for this info but have no way of scanning a pic of the Stoll. Crying or Very sad

Put one of those fiberglass '40 Ford hoods on her and she'd be worth a small fortune. Very Happy

I like this one better, but am still a little embarassed today that I was dreaming of building one of these 20-some years ago.

Weren't those kits made someplace like Whitewater, Wisconsin?
Same guy that made the sedan-delivery kit?
(maybe still does).

Yup-- that's the one, although I had him placed in southern Wisconsin.
Phelps is really way up Nort, der. Almost da U.P., eh?
I saw the guy a few years ago atop Pikes Peak.
At 14,110 feet above sea level in a VW kit truck pulling a trailer!! Shocked

Actually, the kit was purchased in the US like 10 years ago...it is fiber.

No more kits are available, as far as I know....but the car is sensational.

I'm pretty sure that is a "Buffel" Coupe, built by Burly Burlile, of Burly Industries, in (I think) Mendon, UT. Burly made the kits to turn your car into a somewhat Stoll Coupe lookalike... I seem to recollect that he also made a '32 Ford radiator shell affair for the front of the Bug, as well, back in the 1980's

I kind of liked it from the side, but that back view isn't working for me. Not feeling any love for the rear windows or the midget decklid.

BGW Spectre bought the Burly molds and they can still make new kits upon request

Shocked That kit car is like a really disproportionate Stoll Coupe.... kinda like the Stoll Coupe went through the wash and didnt come out quite the same....(something like that.... Rolling Eyes )
