I think there might have been late 16" boxes without yellow handle ends in 1951/1952.
But still with a very long pointy tip at the small screwdriver. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Here are my two 16" Hazet tool kits. I'll get better pictures soon.

I have an WTB ad up for one and the sellers contacted me directly and were asking $6500.
Coincidently, another person offered one in rougher shape with a couple of missing tools to me for $1600.
What is the price for these? |
This 16" box has only two correct tools, the wheel lug wrench Hazet 772/2 and the 36 mm spanner Hazet 561, ALL rest of the tools are incorrect for this box, they are much later, 1956-58.
This box is good for parts, you get an early box with two tools, missing nine tools out of 11, you then need to find these nine tools, all of which are much harder to find and more expensive than the tools in the box, which you can always sell. Still, not what the seller is promising. Worth NO WHERE NEAR $6500, closer to $1500 but why buy a box full of incorrect tools??

The Hazet Tourist box was introduced for 1952, they were not available earlier and first appear in the Hazet 1952 Catalog. The Tourist is not in the 1951 catalog.
Early 1952 screwdrivers have yellow tips on handles and the screwdrivers have no markings. Late 1952 screwdrivers do not have yellow paint on handles like usariemen says but the small screwdriver is still different from 1953 and later 813-3. The 811-6 is already marked with brand and part number but 813-3 is not. Here is a picture of a near mint original late 1952 16" kit that came with the original label dating it to October 1952.
Screwdrivers appear green but are painted with Hazet blue and clear coated. The clear coat has yellowed from age making the handles appear greenish.

That is one of the super rare 123 gram caps.
The normal 120 gram caps go for a lot less. _________________ Chris

Damn then they wasted a whole page for promotion in spring 1951?
Telling the "Gute Fahrt" readers a not existing product can be bought at any VW dealer.

Interesting, it first appears in the 1952 Hazet catalog and is not available in the 1951 catalog: http://www.hazet.de/de/home/my-hazet/hazet-in-der-historie/
It still might have come out sometime in 1951 but was not available when the 1951 catalog was printed?
According to the add it is certainly something new, so definitely not available 1950 but this would confirm it came out mid year 1951? |

I do not remember where from I got the opinion it was introduced in 1950.
But I believe that for years. I must have seen/read some proof once.
Maybe I can find it.
I think VW "invented" this accessory in 1950 for their customers and Hazet just jumped on the train with the "Tourist" box in 1952. _________________ Master of my domain!

Or they offered it to dealers before they put it in the catalog. _________________

I have this 16" HAZET toolbox.
I am not a specialist in that but as the knowers just seem to be together here: are the visible tools og to the box?
More pics in the gallery.

Looks like most tools are the original ones, the WaPu pliers seem to be wrong, should be 760 with "L" underline, small wrenches should be 450-7x9, 600-10 and 600-14, again with "L" underline. All in all a nice original box with mostly correct tools including rare original early screwdrivers with yellow tips on handles. |

Jan
This is how the big pliers should look like.
And in my ( I think very early ) box, the small one has a unusual Hazet logo on the side and not on the handle.
But there well might have been even 16" boxes with the more common Hazet writing in the handle. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Thanks very much Carsten and Mike for your expertise, it is greatly apreciated. IŽll have a look to the wrenches. There are indeed three more in the box plus a spare clutch cable that is rolled inside around the cover to be equipped for all eventualities out on the rough roadside
Sorry to all having "misused" this thread which originally is the whine thread ofcourse. |

Got better pictures of my two 16" tool kits.
This one doesn't have the correct lug wrench.

These are very nice and rare kits, interesting that some kits have chromium plated early 1850-6 pliers like the kit above. The rest of the tools are nickel plated and have rusted, chrome has lasted better. Same thing with usariemen/Carsten kit, 1850-6 pliers are chromed though chrome is flaking on the head. Most often the pliers are nickel plated however.
According to Hazet catalog 1952 the tools were delivered flat (matt) nickel plated for Hazet Tourist kits although chromed tools with polished heads were also available, probably for a higher price. Maybe both pliers were used and were mixed in production?
The correct 1850-6 for these kits have no part number and just say "Hazet" on the hinge like usariemen/Carsten kit. I think the cleaner FRK kit has the correct pliers and the kit with more patina has the later style that say "Hazet 1850-6" and "Germany" on the OUTSIDE of the handles and came out in about 1953 for the Oval kits? Then in 1955 the style changed again and pliers have part number and brand name on the INSIDE of the handles and a more robust texture on the outside on the handles. By 1958 very shiny chrome plating came out but pliers remained the same until 1965.
Original 16" kits have quite a few differences and were probably not as uniform as the later Tourist kits. |

Not sure about the wrench sizes, my early 16" box came with a 450-7x9 & 600-10/600-14 but should'nt it be a 450-7x8/10x12 & 600-14? |

No, it is nickel as well. It looks just more shiny from the flashlight.
All tools in the early box have the warm, little more yellowish nickel plating.
Except the smallest wrech wich was missing and I placed a little newer one in.
I have a 1952/53 box. There in all tools have already the cold, more silver chrome plating.

How are the 764 stamped in the 1951 versus 1953 kits, D.R.G.M or D.B.G.M (Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster vs. Deutsches Bundes-Gebrauchsmuster). It is my understanding that at some point the text was changed. Also does the 1953 764 have the text "Germany" after "764", earlier ones do not have the text "Germany". Finally, are the both tools original to the kits. |
