This photo is from late '97. Wish I had that Mango Bus back!

Really, WTF is so nice about it? Is that what that POS is? I would rather stab myself than own that car. My Aunt's car back then, her fault.

It must have been brand-new at the time, the rear suspension hadn't collapsed yet...

Howdy folks.

I did some searching on "patina", but didn't really find anything that addressed my questions. If this shouldn't be here, please feel free to move it. My 62 ragtop will never be very original and any patina it may have had when we bought it is buried under a couple mediocre repaints from the 80s. It will never be stripped down to bare metal and repainted, so it is what it is. I think the patina look is really cool, not sure about some patina versus mostly patina though.

I do have some questions about value, which is obviously subjective. I think everyone can agree that a VW with nice OG paint is worth the most. Which is more desirable, OG paint with patina or a complete but not show quality OG color repaint? What about patina, maybe even a lot of it and/or with some dents and dings, versus a non-original repaint, or one where the interior color is original but the exterior isn't? I guess I'm wondering if a patina car is worth more than a non-patina car or if it really is more dependent on the overall condition…

It seems pretty common for a patina car to have at least one body part that isn't original and doesn't match. It seems like the most common "fix" for that is either primering the part or stripping it and letting it rust. Among you patina experts and aficionados, what is the best way to get a car with one or two mismatched parts looking whole? It seems to me that best matched primer and OG color in spray cans, followed by distressing could work (not sure I have seen that though). What about distressing a matching, non-patina OG color part, sand down to primer and/or bare metal in a pattern that matches the fade on the rest of the car?

Thanks, Doug

Took my 70 standard on it's first cruse and car show a few weeks ago. It was stupid hot out and she started to get a little overheaty toward the end but we made it.

the questions you ask as a whole are very subjective. there are many different versions of what each person considers patina and what each feel is more valuable/desirable.

personally for me a very nice OG paint car that has some wear to the paint "patina" is much more desirable and valuable to "ME" then anything that has been repainted "moderately speaking with that". obviously 10 point restorations excluded.

Again "personaly" I an not a fan at ALL on fauxtina-ing a car. when it comes to painting it and then sanding it down to make it look worn or patina-ed. I think if you are going to go to the trouble to do body work, primer and paint than just leave the nice paint job. if you wanted a patina looking one you should have just left it the way it was before sanding down a 5k paint job. Now if your blending some paned fauxtina to match the rest of the OG patina then, that's fine by me. personally speaking again. I have fauxtina all my fenders to match my shell. why because my car is a rare one year only color and because I think finding a barndoor bus would be easier than finding OG color correct panels.

my car for reference

When it comes to how someone wants something to look well that's life!!.. We take the liberty of expressing it on car or canvas like an artist would.

Can you imagine walking in a art gallery and everything on the wall is same shit or concept !.. BORING !!!!

Thanks, this is what I am talking about. There is a bug FS locally that has great patina but has one front fender that doesn't match and the decklid is incorrect and has just been stripped and allowed to rust. The fender has been partially sanded down and more sanding (to primer) with some sea blue rattle can accents would probably look pretty good. I am not a fan of the solid primer or solid rust mismatched look. I think either matching the OG primer as well as possible and adding some correct color, or finding a sea blue decklid and sanding parts of it to primer and/or bare metal would be best. Maybe a correct decklid with OG sea blue or old weathered re-spray is good enough without the extra work. I was just wondering what patina lovers usually do...
