Here is a scan of an original photo that was included in the 1950 VW bus press kit. Check out how the lens is either broken or the assembly is holding water. The lens is the fluted wide sliver version and does not appear to have any markings on it. Other photos show the adjustment screws at the "Hella" position near the mount screw.

Could it be that the first headlight rings were without a drainhole ?

This photo is from the classifieds and states the headlight assemblies are NOS, date stamped "50 L" or December 1953. The glass is the thin sliver style.
Guido, if you have more photos and information on these it would be much appreciated. I think this must be near the break from large sliver to small. I think all 54's would have the small sliver lens.

There are more pictures in my ad, all the reflectors are also dated 53
I have also the same headlight here but stamped 20 M (54)
A friend found these in a old dealership in Germany last week , I bought them all ! 2 sets are already sold ! so don't wait to long !
The llast 5 months I found several Barndoor headlights , a few big silver lenses aswel ( Don't ask, they are in a Good place now in the USA)
The youngest big silver headlights that I found were dated 32 K, but that means nothing ! These 2 lenses had a hella logo ! I also sold atleats 2 sets big silver without any logo to the same friend ! one reflector from these lights was dated 48 H (late 49 ????)
Regards,
Guido

I do not have specific dates when they changed !
But your list looks ok for me ! But I know for sure that the big silver lens was used atleast till aug 52 (with hella logo on the lens)
The brass reflectors ended arround june 50 !
And the special headlight rings (double spring) in the same period !

I have also found these Bosch lenses:
They don't have a VW logo either, same question: does that make them replacements of were they made for different car brands? They also don't have the script Bosch logo as found on early beetle lenses.
And what years are these?
|
I have a pair of lenses as these BOSCH symmetric lenses Kai is showing, BUT with VW logo where Kai´s have the BOSCH logo. Mine have the Bosch logo on the opposite side between the circled A and NL. Sorry no pics onhand at the moment.
The "lined" area around the VW logo is larger than at later HELLA symm. buslenses but smaller tan those at the first 50-52 lenses, just as Kai´s have.
What year buses are these for? |

Now here are fotos of these BOSCH VW logoed symm. lenses, on has a tape strip with part nr. 211 941 115 D on it, both are NOS. Quite big sliver area. What year buses are they for??
General view
Detail of sliver area and VW logo
Detail of oppsite side with BOSCH logos (both slightly different in position though)
VW logo and opposite side BOSCH logo etc... in direct comparison
Writing on lense´s side rim.
What year of splitbus might those be for? |

Thanks Scotty, I did so and found that these BOSCH lenses are not BD lenses.
They are for buses mid 1955 through mid 1960, correct?!? |

i would like to say a big"FUCK YOU" to the wiggle wire that holds the lense to the chrome ring ,as it is a pain in the ass to remove and reinstall. |
I hear that. I struggled with those things on a set of buckets I recently got out of Germany. When they are rusty and break apart, they are eye-ball-seeking tetanus missiles. |
BTW: These wiggle wires ONLY work with the og early headlightrings who have the inner lip. Later chromerings w/o that inner lip don´t allow to use that old fixing wires, they then slip out of their seat constantly. |
