I believe the most accurate spot for temperature readings is the oil pressure relief sender.

Thanks guys.

Mines on the sump, also. I added this thread to the tech articles sticky, since this question seems to come up alot.

Hi,

Two questions basically:
Going to use the GB 227A I think it is. Just a on/off switch similar to the dipstick version.

1) Place the sender in the sump (bottom plate) Good enough? Or should the gallery be tapped and entered at the type3 stock oil filler location (like Glenn)

2) Since it is going to be spliced into the oil-pressure light wire, is there some way to tweak the signal so that I know it is the temp-sender and not pressure sender? Was thinking of some sort of device that make the light flimmer steadily. Perhaps difficult since it grounds the circuit instead of being on the hot side?

I had an oil temp sender that screws into the stock pressure sensor hole. I ran just that in the hole for a while just to see what my temps were before I installed my T fitting for both senders. Drove it twice, then went to take it out to install the T and found it had nicely exploded inside the case and almost completely pluged my oil gallery. It took me a while with a flash light and a dental pick, but i got all the parts and pieces outta the hole. Glad I caught it when I did! I'm a bit weary of that style now and run the one that goes into the drain plug hole.

...mine is in the drain hole on an extended sump. Without an external cooler ( but with external filter) , what sort of 'normal ' temps should it be running?.. Confused

I've since moved my sender so no it's in the oil filter mount. That way I'm seeing the temp as it enters the engine.

I was also thinking of doing that.Does it restrict flow?not much room left inside the oil galley once sender is in.Great location for a accurate reading.

Cant see why the temperature rise should be so large from the pickup tube to the filter?

Any opinion on the electrical part?

There is no restriction.

Can't say since I have a totally different engine. It's still new and needs to be dialed in, so 'll have to wait and see.

I have 2 senders on my case - one in the type 3 oil block off plate and one in the relief position. The sump temps (type 3 plate) are usually 20 degrees hotter than the relief position.

The relief position is a mixture of cooled oil coming from the external cooler/filter return (bleeding past the piston) and oil in the case sloshing up into the bottom of that relief well.

So 200 at the relief position is usually 240ish at the sump location.

I do think, however, the sender in the type 3 plate is reading high since it is sinking heat out of the case itself. The sender tip is the same casting as the threads - so oil temp and case temps can influence it.

I'll be driving the SC to TX tomorrow and watching the temps - comparing the 2.

I installed my temp sender on the block off plate at the rear of the engine, where the Type 3 oil filler would go, if the engine were utilized as such.
