Was this bus in Durango across the street from a Walmart at a self storage place up on a hill? I tried to move there in 2003 and stored some things at the storage lot. Always wondered if it was still there!

It has aged well! I tried to buy it several times that summer. Avery was the old guys name I think. I'll have to look to see if I still have some pics of it

Is that kombi original paint? If so, what color is that?

Agreed on the faded Montana red Westy. What a great look.

I can finally post in this category again. Landed a sweet 59 Panel on the weekend. In it's last active duty, it housed a large generator on the cargo floor.
Lots more photos in my gallery.

Got a line on a 21 window Samba rotting away in the woods, went to see it today and this is what we found. Pretty "cheesy" most of it feels like paper ready to tear, but I believe there are salvageable parts. If anyone sees something of value here let me know. I'll be going back to salvage what I can during the next week. I don't believe it is savable as a whole, as even the roof is bad but if somebody sees value let me know Shocked

Strip all the sunroof parts, you may need a impact Phillips head punch for the tracks of the Sunroof, thats what I need on the last one I striped in that shape. Also cut out the bulkhead- they are in short supplie, any trim, door parts, sun visor, look for rear seat hold down clamps, rear haych & engine hatch ect.

If you can get that 21wd out in 1 piece, or a few pieces someone will probably want it. Make it a roller and it should sell.

If you decide to cut it up I would plan to just cut that roof off and carry it out without messing with the rusty screws.

I feel like these days it's a better idea to drag it out and try to sell it as a whole at first if you can. Even if it's a rust bucket. I always see adds for "21/23 any shape". As long as a vin is still there somewhere.

It saves you the headache of coordinating payment for multiple panels with the myriad of flakey buyers. Or people that don't like where you cut it... Blah blah etc.

My take is that this is about as bad as they get and can still be saved. And much better ones have been cut up or destroyed. Whatever route he chooses it is gonna be a lot of work to make some monetary gain. It has the top mechanism, but it is pretty rusty, no doubt. The top and the deluxe trim are about the only things worth carrying out for sale. Might be $1000 net profit?
If it could be extracted and put on suspension front and rear, that is, to make it a roller it would have to be worth $5k to $10. A chain saw, an all terrain fork lift and it could be on a trailer.
Some ambitious person could fix the rear damage and the top skin. Then normal rust repair and complete interior and glass. A hobbyist's 3 year labor of love.
It also seems a bit more socially responsible to remove it completely and restore the site. Maybe not so ethically driven but because I have ADD.
If I left part of that hulk there, every time I'd drive down the street I would wonder if I got it all or if there was some other treasure still under the leaves out there. It would creep me out a tiny bit each time.
I pick up cigarette butts on my sidewalk.
But when I remove one of my hulks from a long time resting place, I go over the site with a rake and magnet. Once I even found a good wrench from my tool box, so THERE!

definitely the first camper window i have ever seen in the very rear. Nice bus

I bought 10 Westy Windows from a ~64 Standard. Four on each side and two in the back hatch. It was like a solarium. I may have a pic somewhere. Think

Not my bus, or my hunt, but I stooped by a friend's place recently to take a few pics of his latest "find". This is a really rough, but surprisingly dry 1960 single cab pulled from the side of a North Idaho mountain. It has been there for decades serving as a target. Not much left, but still worth pulling out.

Sorry for the poor lighting in the photos. Not much choice, as the bus doesn't roll around without a tractor tied to it.

Enjoy.

I kinda think the "1600" emblem is from a Porsche 356. I'd put it together and roll it. With some patching. Probably easier than fixing rust.
