Which shalaco has the doors that come all the way.
And has a wider post between the door and the engine cover.
I may have access to one.

Wider post might be the "long body" which was meant to cover a Corvair engine. Not sure by what you mean with the doors that 'come all the way'.

I mean the one that the doors go all the way down to the tanks. And has a wide space on the roof between the doors.
Also the rollbar is in the center. Coming down into the center of the dash.

Could be a Dean original build based on items not seen in other Shalako's. Great deal, if you don't mind a little funkiness. And, sounds like what Uncleg084 also may have...

Yes - those are two tell-tale signs of a Dean build Shalako. The standard kit sold by his shop and the shop on Long Island, NY had flimsy doors that almost met in the middle of the roof and stopped just below the window. All the Dean-build cars I have seen have doors that come down to the belt line, their roof sections are wide and have that odd roll bar down the center of the windshield - got any pics?

It's just like the yellow one on page 1 of this thread - same round integrated headlights in pods. Hard to say if it's a true ShalaVette - either one - or a splash of one.

Starting a build of this Shala Vet. Any info on Shala Vets would be useful. I have conflicting info on how many originals were made and if copies were made. This looks very close to the silver one that is supposed to be an original except this one does not have the molded battery area. Will be posting progress periodically.

IMO it does not really matter how many were made as it really does not do much to add to the value. Just another fiberglass kit car/buggy at the end of the day.

I never got the appeal of the Shalavette personally. The Shalako on the other hand is one cool buggy.

There's a Shala-Vet on eBay with doors and a top. I posted photos in the Kit Car gallery.

Keith Dean please let us know if this is one of your fathers cars (Dick Dean).

Not Corvair. That is a Type IV VW or 914 engine with a center mounted 4bbl carb. Unusual.

My stepdad and I just purchased this car out of Las Vegas. It was listed as a VW kit car, but when we got there, the gentleman we purchased it from said it was part of a small production. From the little information we could find on the internet, it looks like the original DD cars were kits, and had the classic dunebuggy front end. As you can see, this has the long nose, gullwing doors and fiberglass body.
We just got it up on the lift last night, only to find most of the chassis is boxed in. (we were hoping for numbers or markings...)
Any info would be appreciated.
Also, so awesome to find this forum!

I am in the process of buying a Shalako to restore. I have done several fiberglass builds including a Fiberfab Jamaican on a Austin Healey 3000 chassis. That was 1968 ( I would not ruin a Healey now..) I have had a '73 Thing that I can't get into doing so I am selling it and putting the new 1915 VW and Rancho transaxle in the Shalako. I am pulling a trailer to Arizona for 2 months at the first of the year and my UTV and Thing won't fit plus the Think puts the weight over capacity. 1200 lbs. works well and I can't wait to get 'er done.
If anyone knows where a set of clam shell doors are at I would definitely be interested in them. Probably never find them but this would be the place. Razz
If I can't find any , I will form some out of aluminum rather than cut the body up.

Got her home and already pulled the drive train. I installed the Rancho IRS tranny and just about have my 10 year old new 1915 in. I found that mice had decided to take up residence in the fan shroud so I am pulling the shroud and demoing the nest. I have some parts coming for remote oil filter and cooler and bumpers.I hope to have the engine alive for the first time soon at least long enough to burnup the MMO in the cylinders. Twisted Evil
