He can have them. The best comeback is for that guy to sit on a stack of unsold plates -thus devaluing them. Nobody puts "1965 bus" plate frames on their cars- because they are just like the "1965 mustang" plate frame crowd. Now he is creating the same novelty status with black plates. He's the lower IQ equivalent of those who reserve domain names.
The way to go is to FIND plates at swaps that have their bus' model number on them- or at least something like this:

You can hold on to the plates without them being on a car as long as you pay the yearly fees on them.

Well, he's got ten sets for sale- paid what, $80 for each set to be made (CA guys- you know better than me)- and his wife will finally notice this hit to the old checkbook in approx. three weeks. After we've waited this guy out- his wife is gonna beat him senseless.

Good point....I didn't think of it that way; I suppose in VW terms I think of "rag" as sunroofs and "vert" as convertibles. I've never heard of a convertible Ghia or Beetle referred to as a "rag" or "ragtop"; that's more US muscle car vernacular to me. |

Many years ago I had a 63 ragtop beetle for sale on craigslist. Photos and everything. Had a guy call, very excited, wanting to come check it out right away. He and his girlfriend drove 70 miles to come see it and were disappointed that it was a ragtop beetle, not a convertible beetle. I asked if he actually looked at the photos. He said he didn't. He was actually a little pissed off. Made me laugh.

I agree. ragtop = sunroof in my book too. factory sunroof ghias are as rare as hens teeth.. hack jobs are far easier to find and would probably be be better suited for his plates. |

I am sure glad that I have the original california black plates for my ragtop ghia.
personalized plates were not available in the black plate era anyway, so those are just silly fantasy stuff that never was.
