I sold a pair of family portraits and now they need to get to the other side of the country and I don't know how to ship them. These are paintings from the 1800's in frames with old glass. I looked up FedEx and they want to charge me 8 thousand dollars to ship them lol! Would a trucking service be a good choice? These are going to a museum, where they will be properly cared for and displayed for the enjoyment of the public. I am the direct descendent of a famous family that founded a city and are well known , we have several museums in different states and they will finally have the key portraits that have been in my family since they were painted. I can't allow these items to get damaged so I want to see what the community here thinks I should do. Spending thousands to ship them is out of the question, it's not like museums pay big dollars for the things they get, in fact they were bought by a private party that is donating them to one of the museums.

Damn, for that kinda dough I'd buy them an airline seat beside me and deliver them myself.

That's a good idea, thanks. The paintings are just normal 3 foot square kinda heavy but not over 50 pounds. Value is impossible to determine because any damage or loss would be unacceptable to me. Maybe I will take the bus and drive them there.

Send them "Registered Mail" thru the Post Office.

Put them in a wooden crate or some metal reinforced case, and seal them in a waterproof bag. DO NOT send then in a cardboard box that can get damaged by an idiot.

Good idea.
But what happens when the bus driver falls asleep and the bus rolls over and Art goes flying out the window, then what?

Thank you too, I will look into that. About the possibility of rolling buses and flying art, I'm cool with that as long as I die when it happens. Laughing

This was my thought too - they must have procedures in place for this exact sort of thing.

Contact/call/stop by the Phippen museum and ask them how they ship such items. Perhaps they could even recommend a shipper.

I seriously doubt that FedEx was going to charge you $8,000 to ship them. I'd love to see the search parameters you used to come up with that figure.

Contact the "private party" buyer and ask them how they'd like their art to be shipped.

It sounds like there will, or should be, much bubble wrap and styrofoam packing used inside custom made, reinforced wooden crates.

If they are so irreplaceable and historically important, then expense should be less of a factor than their safe arrival.

I like that idea too, Phippen is right down the road. I didn't use search I called fedex and asked about their white glove service and the guy was real nervous and said how far that is and how the drivers need to go less than 50mph bla bla bla lol, it came out they wanted 8 grand, no lie. Laughing

You need a courier service, someone that is licensed and bonded and has insurance. You can expect to pay maybe a third of the ridiculous prices you've been quoted. If the items have been appraised and paperwork in order it should not be a problem.

The museum should select the method of shipping along with the shipper.
The high cost quoted reflects the insurance risk involved.
Do not attempt to package or crate this yourself.
Insurance carriers will deny a claim due to inadequate or improper packaging.

Whoever the Buyer is should arrange everything from picking up to packing
to insurance to delivery .... Idea

PM sent ...
Nicest owner/operator shop I have ever seen.
One of the nicest guys you will ever meet as well.
I picked us a VW single cab transporter from him a few weeks ago
and took it to Wisconsin.
I have to haul a VW he bought in Arroyo Grande, CA to him.
