I have rust stains from my old windshield and from my old head light rings. I was thinking about using CLR cleaner but was concerned about damaging the paint underneath which is still very good. (My Thing was repainted at some point before my ownership, and semi-gloss wasn't used.)

Is CLR good to use? Should I use something else? What should I use after cleaning the rust stains up?

CLR will work but might be harsh for a clear coat. I use it on my junker all the time, but I'm not worried about the shine. Evapo-Rust is a great product to use on painted surfaces. You can get it at your local Advanced Auto Parts or Walmart but it will take a lot longer to work than CLR.

I'll try to get to it tomorrow. (Did my chores before the deluge hit; probably won't visit Thing today.)

Shocked

Here's a sample ...

That is crazy intense!

However, I'm not sure if that helps my decision making or not. That surface rust came from years of the El Camino itself. My rust stains came from a different source and the runny, rusty water of the source stained a different area of Thing -- headlight rings stained the area below on the panel itself; the old windshield frame dribbled rusty water onto the hood/fender area.

I'm going to have to read the panel of both products. My stains are child's play compared to the pic above. Maybe CLR diluted is enough. Evapo-Rust is already water-based. Certainly between the two I have my solution (no pun intended, or avoided).

Thanks!

BTW, that pic/thread tells me to be less fearful as I look for a beater daily driver -- even another Thing (though, unlikely given my throw-away-car budget). There has been a car or two I passed on because my wife would be appalled at the "before" version but would be okay with the "after" version of that pic.
