Going through this system, everything looks very usable still. If anyone could give some help on wiring schematics or pictures of them wired up will be quite helpful. I have been doing a lot of searches with little success, so I have taken a lot of pics documenting part numbers and components. Any help of info you have on these systems would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Very Happy

Interesting!

That distributor looks like it has centrifugal advance only.
The points resemble the old 36 HP "dogleg" style points

It makes me wonder what carburetor was originally installed on the military models.

Are the cylinder heads single port?

Yes it is, 1500cc single port motor. And from my research, a 30 PICT 2 carb would have been used.

Aren't the Military versions 24V?

I think I have to disagree.
Nice pictures, but that is not a 'watertight' ignition system. (Notice there are no gaskets or o-rings). It is an RFI shielded ignition system to reduce radio frequency interference in military high frequency and low frequency two-way communications systems. The earlier Type 181s were used by military organizations (like NATO) as radio cars. You can find examples if pictures on the Internet with the radio sets mounted in the back seat area. If I recall, the vehicle was not 24V, but it may have been equipped with a second 24V generator just for the radio sets. All generators and voltage regulators were also heavily shielded and included many filter capacitors (condensers) on most electrical leads, and metal boxed shielded electrical connections.

Mine seems to be 12 volt.

@tallman206 Thank you for the clarification. It does seem like many of the connections are watertight though. All of the spark plug & distributor connections have rubber compression fittings. It may not be submersible, but definitely keeps moisture out.

All Military 181's were not 24V. Some, especially radio cars and those equipped with other power hungry equipment were to handle the extra draw. I would agree that that is not a watertight setup. I do wonder if there was such a thing for 181's. I would think the exhaust would be a problem for one thing. I'll have to do some research.

Hello
Yes, there is a second 24V generetor for the radio Cool

I just got my birth cirtificate back from Volkswagen, and they consider it watertight.

Check out these videos they show a lot of the wiring in the engine compartment. Maybe they will help you out a little

my NATO Thing came with that setup.

not really difficult to set it up..just found some specifics

- the coil is usually a red one. no inner resistance.
- didnt find a way to replace capacitor...

you can throw out the filters, and use non shielded plug cable. and yes..seems you are missing a rubber ring

Didn't know where to post this. Military shielded lot I've got. Don't know if it all fits vw and 181. But of you recognize anything please tell.

I don't think the previous 181 system would be considered fully watertight for military spec. They are probably more water resistant than normal ignition but their main purpose would be radio shielding. Some parts are both waterproof and shielded sutch as cool and wires but a waterproof distributor would have had a o-ringed shielded cap cover and the fully waterproofed spark plugs looks something like this:

Edit: sorry I'll take that back, you're just missing the o-ring
