Just purchased 68' bay. Brake lights don't work or directionals.
Headlight lights low and high beams work. Went to replace emergency
flasher and original 12 post unit no longer available just 8 post. Anyone
know of a work around? Thanks

Welcome to TheSamba!

Do you mean 12 wire?
Early 1968 had a 9 pin Emergency Flasher Relay (J).
cip1 says they have them.

Yes I mean 12 wire. Old style flasher is shown on diagram
But this bus has flasher with knob and emergency light.
I wish it had the old style flasher. Any ideas? There has got to be
A way to incorporate the new flasher with additional flashers.

Generally we count the number of terminals on the flasher box so we can all play along on the same page, not how many wires may be spliced together to attach to said terminals. A 68 would have come with a 9 terminal flasher box and a 2 or 3 terminal dash switch, if you have something other than that you'd better break out the camera and show us: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6

Is your 68 US (red only tail lights) or Euro (red/amber tail lights)? Is it early or late 68? You may need to search through other wiring diagrams, including 67 split bus, to find the one that matches-ish your bus. But first you checked all your connections, etc right?

The bus has red tail lights only. I have learned that in 68
VW used three different emergency flashers of which only one
Is made today. The bus currently has a twelve pin flasher. I purchased
One from WCM with 8 pins, one being ground and another with
a resistor attached. I am going to begin cleaning all pin connectors
of the wiring system then test current flasher and relays might take awhile
Just don't know of any other way to figure my problem with brake lights
And directionals. Thanks

lights but cannot seem to find the original light what a
surprise. If anyone has a fix let me know.
Thanks

What happens if you unplug one or both switches from the master cylinder?

If I remove wires from all three switches no brake lights so
I assume one of the switches is bad. Am I correct?

assumption is the mother of all fuck up's. pin out the terminals and diagnose the issue.

if you find the switches are bad, be very wary of aftermarket switches...they puke their guts, and you lose your brakes...

Agreed, if you are still running a 3 switch master make sure the plugs are on the correct switches and if any have 3 wires that the wires go to the appropriate terminal on the switches. If all that checks out there's a good chance you have a bad switch, they fill up with sediment and jam sometimes.
