Hello all, I come into your Fourm humble and dedicated. I am not sure if some of what is done here on this build, may or may not offend some. I have been in the car Volkswagen restoration and modification hobby for +25 years. Not to get to long in words, life has thrown a curve ball and this bus will hit it out of the park because family is first.
I have put other restorations on hold:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=418455&highlight=

I hope this will be a journey for all of us to complete a bucket list. So this guy I was lucky enough to find, is a second owner 1971 tin top camper. I had to sell mine years ago and mom always cherished that bus. So now here we go, not having the time to do it myself because of other restoration constraints, as well as time. I turned the paint, interior, and suspension, over to Wes the man VDUB CLASSICS. Doing this for 25 years, you know who's real, who is good, and who is committed. Wes is the real deal and I will show you why as this moves forward. Wes is knowledgeable, honest and his shop is second to none. I will be taking care of the drive train and trans axle as well as detail and modifications for the better. All of these minor things will be hidden, so Tommy looks stock, but will be rock solid. More to come this is just the start.

Here is the power plant that will be going into this restoration. It is going to be a solid 2007cc with a rancho freeway flyer. My life long friend and mentor Kenny Jansen owner of Jansen Enterprise will be doing the machining and adding his tricks of the trade.

Nice! It looks like it's going to be a great project.

BTW, love your quote in your signature though it's not like VW owners are cheap or anything! Laughing

This is the real Tommy(RIP). He was my father, mentor, and rock. He was also the man of my beautiful mother for 53 years. He will now take Mom where she wants to go in the form of this bus.

Kenny has the case machined, crank-rods mated and the sport exhaust arrived. Some other pieces of the puzzle have arrived as well. Slowly gaining momentum. Very Happy

So got a few more bits for Tommy the other day. Received some pretty billet torsion tube caps (Wagenswest), metal Ca Dept of Housing tag, and a Westfalia-Werke tag. Putting HD sway bars front and back for wind sway, also running adjustable Koni shocks on corners. Went with the billet caps for additional lateral sway factor (albeit small), but IMO stiffer than stamped steel. Small things, but they all add up in the ride quality. Those of you that know me from over the years and the 59 Cabriolet build know I can't compromise quality of ride and safety. Slowly moving forward, engine tins out for power coating, stay tuned.

I can't comprehend someone who cares about safety installing a rear sway bar.

But it's your ride, I would just suggest taking it to an empty parking lot and trying to lose control with and without the bar installed.

Will do, just remembering my last 71 and the sway in the rear on the 8 ply tires. I appreciate the comment and will take it into the overall. Appreciate you taking the time to give me the opinion. I can see your point of it letting the suspension yield and give with the rear sway bar; thus making the bus too stiff and top heavy. May mount it then drive it and see the sway, feel suspension load and unload laterally and torsionally, then take it off and do the same. Not hard set on running it, just building it right now and going off my past experiences. Much thanks

Slow but steady progress on the restoration. Parts are trickling in and motor is all done. Waiting on the tinware powder coating for top side of motor then I will bench test and tune. This bus had almost no rust on it, only a very small quarter size piece in the door. Jams sprayed and next week will be in color. Coming together so hope to have this guy on the road by end of October.
