I'm looking at around a 9pm arrival time to the campsite.
Anyone know the GPS location of the campsite? |
According to google maps the campground at Penitente Canyon is at 37.841919, -106.280365.
For anyone looking for more info on Penitente, here is the USFS web page for the campground: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/riogrande/recarea/?recid=64790
And this is the brochure: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5192370.pdf
These are the directions to get to the CG from the site:
Quote: |
From Highway 285 turn west on County Road G, travel about 6 miles to La Garita follow County Road 38A until you see the Penitente Canyon turn off on your right, less than a mile.
From Del Norte travel northwest on Highway 112 to road 38A turn north, stay on 38 A until you see signs for Penitente Canyon, about 8 miles. |
I've done the road 38A route from Del Norte before, and it is just a typical decent county road. Haven't gone in on CR G from 285. There's good signage on the highways at both turnoffs, so it should be pretty obvious.
I should probably also note what the website says about rattlesnakes in the canyon. Apparently they are really common there. Keep an eye out |

OK to show up last minute? I'm trying to get off work so I can make the trip down from Denver, will likely be a last minute deal... |
How late is last minute? There are a few of us in the springs that are headed out later on Friday if you'd like to caravan down. _________________ 1965 Pearl White Caravelle Camper

Got my MC all swapped out, bled and test drove. All seems to be working great
The monsoons have just teased us so far this year, so do your rain dances or whatever... Roads will be really dusty if they don't show up really soon! I can hardly remember a CO July where we didn't have the monsoons by now.
Rain or not, I don't care. I just need a good camping weekend! Can't wait to get this trip started! |
Yeah, I am still working on the biotch. Figured out yesterday that the passenger side axle I took off was chingered on the outside edge. Someone must have really hammered on it before I purchased the Syncro. Had to take it to a machine shop to have it pressed off the axle. Good thing I save axles. Found 4 more good ones in my pile of axles. Got the axles all ready to install, finished the bushings on the shift linkage, but still have yet to do the clutch. Been working part time at a friends frame shop, as his asst. quit on him and I am the best he has got....
Anyhow, enjoy the trip everyone. I hope to be ready for a mid August camp out with some friends from ABQ, in Jemez Mtns. Chris, I still would like to get up in early September, if you are up for it to search out the mountain lakes you mentioned. Canoe is ready to go... _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

So we're here at 3 barrel and its friggin HOT so we're bailing on penitene and instead are heading up road 14 outside of del norte, just like tha maps from my last post shows. We'll camp near the road and I'll post up again with camp coordinates when we get there. Call or text me if you're coming and have questions 970-507-0220.
We will still come down to the start point Saturday morning for anyone coming in tomorrow. |

Made it home...my engine has the weirdest "hum" at idle, sounds like a knife through sourdough bread. Sorry I could not do the whole tour, I just could breath from all the smoke in the air. Enjoy! _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Great pics, Greg!
Hope everyone has made it home safe & sound. Thank you all for coming. Sorry some of you missed out. It was a great group and a ton of fun!
We should do it again sometime. Rich says he's workin' on next year's.
Here are some stats about the trip:
Including people who popped in Friday night, we had as many as 8 buses.
For the long haul, we had 5 buses (2 split and 3 bay), 10 people, 4 of which were female (Girls Rock!), 2 children, 8 adults, and 5 dogs. With the exception of Stu who flew through Saturday morning, it was an all Colorado bus group with Tom from Denver driving from the furthest away. We camped at about 8800ft on Friday and 11500ft on Sat.
Here were the best of our pics.

Awesome trip!
I did about 500 miles, met some great bus folks and had a great time. Thanks so much for Chris leading the way on some perfect bus roads and an amazing camping site at 11,500 feet. I camped the night before at the Penitente campground cause I missed the updated camp note. No worries, it was at a good location for me to stop the first day after getting out of Denver a bit late. I have some good pics I'll post when I get a chance, but a lot of mine look like the ones posted. We were all looking at the same shots. Anyway, thanks all for the great weekend and welcoming me into the fold. Can't wait for the next adventure.
Cheers.

Thanks for sharing the photos. Sorry I missed out again this year. Should be good for another trip in a few weeks.
Sorry to hear about the smoke bothering Manfred. That was a huge fire up there. We had our own small one that kept me indoors a few days.
Finally making some of my own headway on the Syncro. Have a few more parts to order but going to wait until I get the flywheel off tomorrow.
How about a cooler weather trip like in 2012, September or next year in the Spring? _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Thanks for all the kind words! This was a really fun trip with a great group! It's always fun to introduce folks to some of our favorite spots.
Rich & Manfred, thanks for making it out for that first night with us. You guys haven't missed any of our Colorado trips (nor has Bubba!) and it wouldn't have felt the same to not have you guys for part of it.
And AWESOME pics Greg! I really need to learn how to get more out of my camera. Your sunset shots from the top of Elwood Pass turned out perfect.
I really had a great time and enjoyed meeting new friends. I'm amazed at how well everyone gelled on this trip. Great conversations at our stops and around the campfire. Just an awesome weekend! Can't wait for the next one. |

Hey Brian. Glad your getting that synchro whipped into shape! We missed you on this one, but there will be more.
Cooler trips are great. Around here fall is really the best... all the roads are closed in Spring till late May. But this year we're out on any CO fall trip. We're actually taking the bus up through the Tetons, Yellowstone NP, and Glacier NP for 3 weeks starting the 2nd week of September I've never been to WY, MT or ID before so this will be all new territory. I'm stoked!
But thats not to say you or anyone else couldn't coordinate a fall trip. I love these mountains that time of year. All any of these trips take is someone to organize them... If you plan it, they will come! |
