The Red9 design is as narrow as they can make it with the lower arms. Otherwise you end up with odd handling as the wishbones aren't long enough. Also the Akerman angle of having a 4" narrower front end are awful.
Red9 have managed to sell over 100 wishbone front ends with one of the worlds worst customer service. They never have any in stock, even though they tell you that when you pay 100% up front. Then you wait weeks/months for it to be built and if you call them, they are doing your one at this very moment. Even though they told you the same story 4 weeks ago.
All you guys need to do is build one that is the same and have them in stock to beat having to wait 6-9 weeks as other Red9 owners have had to. |
Lol. Spot on. |

I think any choice to the RED9 suspension will be a welcome one. The points raised above are not unique or people with unreasonable expectations. While I am sure they will continue this will probably benefit RED9 in the long run as they may build some to have in stock rather than a backlog.
But I am with the others in regards to this....

Kevin, How is your kit coming along?
Do you have any pic's, price, or when it will be available.
Looks like there is plenty of interest ...Including me.
Give us an update.
Thanks, Rob |

Hey would you be interested in making one with steering rack mounted on the front
(to suit R/H drive)
with the capability of running a diff in the center for 4-wheel drive?
so a pair of cv joint type swivel hubs Left & right
?

The kit that Vintage V-dub sells in the Red 9 kit. They might add the air shocks, but the rest of the package is all Red 9.
I did speak to Kevin from Mendola when he was in Vegas for the VW weekend three weeks ago. I asked him how the new A arm front end for was going along. He basically said he was busy with other shop projects and his primary engineer was no longer working for him so this was on the back burner. He said he would have to stop all his other paying shop projects and concentrate on just this project for two weeks or so to finish the production version. This was the main points of our conversation.
This may not be 100% correct, so Kevin feel free to correct me. I am just going from my memory and it is not what it used to be. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

There was a thread where someone was building a Mustang 2 based front end for his bus, ( i will do some searching for it to link it to this) but it looked well thought out and executed, with readily available pieces and decent brakes.

Well I am a bit closer to melting metal in the quest for front suspension performance satisfaction.
Finally at the parts collection phase after 5 years of the W.T.F. am I going to do phase. Going to install a 928 S4 A-arm suspension with a 911 steering rack.
I will update the slow and tedious progress on my build thread.
Just another not so simple and cheap way to modify a bus.

67dubcab, what are you using for your steering shaft and column?
Can it still fit the stock turn signal indicator switch?
I am also in the process of modifying my steering, not the suspension though.
I have the bevel box and a volvo 240 manual steering rack, but have yet to complete the rest of the pieces.
I don't have access to a bay window to determine if the steering column can be fitted into the split while retaining the split's indicator switch. |

Hey lightice,
I am using the stock split bus column with a short piece of the vanagon bus splined end welded onto it so it will slide onto the vanagon bevel box with the vanagon rubber coupler.
It will be pro welded so no safety concerns.
I think I can even keep the stock horn wire functioning.
If you search for user "gumba" he has written up his steering swap utilizing a vanagon bevel box, should be helpful.

Kevin, what you don't realize is that there is a lot of us that would send you a check for a front suspension sight unseen. Come on, let's do this! |
