I am having my 1973 Westfalia painted. The condition is very good already but there is seem rust and one panel needs bodywork. My question is should I have all of the windows removed so the painter can get all in there? I do see some small lines of rust around the bottom of some of the seals but nothing crazy. The paint job was estimated at 6-8k. Just buying all of the seals and rubber would cost me about $1,000, not to mention the labor time. Of course I want the job done correctly but sometimes doing it correctly means leaving well enough alone too. Hopefully there is someone out there that was in the same situation as I am who can give me some advice.

Thank you!!!!
Michael

yes. Especially, if you see even the slightest rust around one of the windows.

$1000 for window rubber? I'm about to redo all of mine, and didn't come up with anywhere near that number from WW. I'm doing a 68 Camper. A bug should be cheaper I would imagine.

For the windshield, rear cargo hatch, both rear windows, and the jalousie seals (no doors), it's $200 at WW.

I only saw your post because I came looking about re-using the rubber. I wanted to be able to replace the seals now, but paint later. Since you should remove everything to paint, here I am. Smile

btw, my conclusion is, no, I can't reuse the rubber. For sure not the windshield (laminated vs tempered glass).

I've decided it will cost me ~$200 extra if I wanted to seal up the windows before I paint. Reality is though, the jalousie windows will come out fine and there's a good chance I can get the 3 in the back out without cutting rubber, so it may only be $40 for the windshield seal.

Last thought...
How long will it be before you paint this car again?
How long do you think the new paint job would have lasted if you had "done it right" and removed the window rubber?
That's a lot of money to spend to not pull out the windows. Cool

I bought a complete German rubbers from WW about 2 years ago and they’ve been sitting on the ground in a Tupperware container. How long do they stay “supple”? I guess they are still ok. It was $$$
