Hope this hasn't been covered. Hope I've placed this in the correct forum. I'm looking for the plastic part that holds the wax thermostat onto the air cleaner base for the '71 type oil bath.. I think the '71 Ghia and '71 Bus may have had a similar part as well. A part number / parts diagram / anything aside from having to buy an entire used cleaner just for this part would be awesome. Mine is broken at the retaining prongs underneath. Considering making one out of something if this is unobtainium... Many thanks, appreciate the help.

Probably find a forum for these under Wax Pellet Thermostat under BayWindow Bus's. Mine is bad too. So I am looking for a 1969 style air cleaner with the cable to run it off of the engine bellows thermostat that controls the flaps.

ha I know that engine.

I am in the same pickle. I had my hopes on using a '68 bug air cleaner because it has two snouts on it, but finding that damn cable is a pain. I opted for a '71 bug cleaner because of the wax pellet thermo. Turns out they're just as hard to get working.

There was a thread a while back where Busdaddy managed to refurb his. I want to pick his brain on that one. Try using that one in the picture, let me know how it works then send one over my way Wink

Seems like the perfect job for one of them fewfangled 3-D printers, I have a few broken ones as well.
Here's the thread on the thermostat reanimation, still working as VW intended today BTW Very Happy Dancing

We have 3D scanning and printing here at work - problem is I think the plastic material is too soft and brittle. I was thinking of casting my original after fixing it up with milliput (epoxy Putty) then casting it in aluminum, but that's a silly amount of wok. Alternately I thought of making a sheetmetal housing and pop-rivetting it on the cleaner.

These thermomstat systems are a pain.

You might do a "lost wax" process on it . check with the high schools for a class in jewelry making.

You could then make it out out of silver.

I just watched a guy on Youtube do 'lost foam' casting with aluminium alloy and model making foam sheet.

Some expensive 3D printers produce brittle and weak parts from resins cured with UV. Like the one we have at work... The other day I showed off a prototype we made 2 years ago and the spring clips on it fell apart when they had been working perfectly back in 2014...

I believe that RepRap style low cost printers with ABS filament may produce more robust results as the ABS does not break down.
