I have an 86 Vanagon with Bronze/Beige Metallic paint.

My old paint is super dull and oxidized. While it definitely shined up on a test spot, I chose NOT to wax the panel where I am doing a repair since I'd simply have to remove it right away in the Wax & Degreaser phase of my project.

Was this a bad idea? Should I have removed all oxidized paint (e.g. waxed and shined) on my van before painting the first coats on the repaired area?

Next, regarding BLENDING metallic paint...

I put on a few coats and now for the final I am supposed to:

Step 1.) scuff the old paint 1-2' around the repair area

what grit? Is 1000 enough to scuff up old, OEM paint?

After i scuff it up is soap & water good enough before spraying the final coat?

Step 2.) spray final coat gradually over the area, with less paint hitting the old, scuffed paint the further out from the repair.
Step 3.) spray clearcoat
Step 4.) spray clearcoat "blender" to melt the finishes together

Does spraying clear coat over dull, oxidized paint ruin this step of blending?

Is there anything I need to be careful about on Step 4? It sounds a bit scary to melt my paints Confused
