Sorry I should clarify; I didn't go through the slots but inserted from the side, inside the engine bay up into the vent area and used the sticks to position it. |

Here are two photos of my 3rd brake light; with and without camera flash so you can get an idea of how it is really hidden in the shadows and not too obvious when not in use.

I realized I never posted a picture of what I ended up with. I decided to buy a light from J&L, as mentioned in my first post. It fits very neatly at the bottom of the rear window and is very unobtrusive when not lit up, and VERY visible when it is lit. This is a nifty unit.

I used the bracket because it would definitely not mount on a horizontal plane without it. The bracket does however create a small gap between the light and the glass and a small gap at the bottom which illuminates the interior with the red light a little more than I would like. If I get ambitious I'm going to try it without the bracket one of these days. The light will definitely be pointing up instead of horizontal eye level, but I bet it might be pretty effective anyhow. I'll let you know.... |

Cool. Ill buy the bracket. Did you happen to find an existing access hole for the wiring? Must be a spot somewhere eh? |

Yes. Best to have both hands off of the steering wheel when expecting to get wallpoped from behind. For the full effect steering shaft impale. 😬 |

I decided to remount the J&L light without the bracket. The light definitely points upwards when flush mounted directly to the glass, but is still pretty darn bright and very little interior lighting. I like it much better. A very classy, well built lite.... |

... I understand your concern... guess it all depends where you live and drive. I am on the southern plains of Oklahoma, where there are not that many other cars on the road and other drivers are truly very considerate of antique car drivers, for the most part... we (you and I) don't share the same concerns, I must say and I have learned, it is unrealistic to be concerned having expectations... having expectations is a state of mind and does not reflect reality... still, a more visible brake light is considerate. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree.

Yea, I'm mostly inner city driving. Just restored this car and have already had 2 people run up my butt when I was stopping and turning. The snowflake lights really are barely visible.... OK for the 50 MPH speed limit and traffic flow in 1956, but not so much now. I'm doing this more to save my ass rather than to be considerate |

... I can relate. I once had a 1955 Messerschmitt and nearly got hit a couple of times. That second time was a near miss and I would have been DOA. As a result, I sold the vehicle, right after that... those experiences were all in Bergen County, NJ... the most densely populated area of the country.
Eventually, we relocated to sparsely-populated Oklahoma and, for a whole host of reasons, would never go back to the craziness of crowded conditions and inconsiderate drivers.... being thoughtful and considerate is of paramount importance to me, at this stage of the game.
... look at the Messerschmitt tail lights... look like '52 to '55 VW hearts. That's my third brake light on the middle... Ha, ha, that wasn't the problem... most drivers did not even see the vehicle. Bought a big Vanagon Westy after that.

Have you removed the inner plastic shade lenses that make the taillights so dim during the day?
Have been putting yellow accessory turn signal lights on our VWs on the license plate frame. Both vintage yellow cone shaped ones and smaller bullet shaped LED ones that are sold for 12 volt, but work just fine on 6 volt. These are connected into the turn signals so work both as turn signal and brake lights.
Found out years ago when going from USA all red taillights to Euro yellow topped taillight lenses on our 1963 KG that was 12 volt. With correct all red TLs had constant problem with other drivers not seeing the signals when changing lanes and getting the finger often. About 95% of that problem went away with just installing the Euro yellow top TLs.
So far have had not legal problems with the extra lights traveling thru most of the states West of the Mississippi River. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I was thinking of doing something similar.. I have concerns how to fix it in there.. last thing I want is LED robe being sucked into the fan!! Also, how did you wire it up? |

15W "Eagle eye" Led light and a home made alu bracket. Has steady light (for 3rd brake) and a flashing mode I'm going to use as emergency light. https://youtu.be/FHr8Uc5LP-Q
