I need to get underneath access to my 70 Beetle. I heard stories of how in high school people would pick up and move them. I have an idea of my son and I GENTLY setting the car on its side. I need to prep the pans and do not have access to a lift. I am to scared to get under the car. The engine is out, doors off, hood and truck, NOTHING is left on the car (except the tires) Any ideas on how to do this safely and not do damage to the car?

Un-bolt the body from the pan "If" your reinforcement rails are solid under the heater channels. Build some saw horses and set the body on it. You can then drain the fluid from the transmission (if it's bolted to the pan) and flip the pan on it's side.

When I did a body off on my 69 vert, the stripped shell was light. Two people could lift it with no problem. I did replace the heater channels and reinforcement rails before doing this. I was also able to lay the shell on it's side resting on the same saw horses to weld under the body.

You should start with a floor jack & four 3 Ton jack stands from Harbor Freight. Jack up all 4 corners & slide under there on a big piece of cardboard & you will get comfortable underneath a car on jack stands. Try to rock the car on the jack stands first & you will see that it will be real steady on a cement floor! A pair of plastic wheel chocks are good if you are only jacking up one end. You have to slide under them to work on cars. Cool

I had the 3 ton stands and went and bought the 6 ton ones. They have a bigger base and you can get the car higher off the floor making it easier to work.

Be careful. Years ago, when I was a young Navy sailor, I had a Triumph Spitfire and was working under it on jackstands. Needed some leverage on a bolt and my foot searched out and pressed against one of the stands, sending it clattering out into the shop. I got out of there FAST.
