I thought it was an ok deal until i read that it doesn't run & the "original" 1.5 liter is all torn apart. The 74 would have had a 1.8 in most cases. If he can get a good running engine in there & make the bus able to be driven $3500 would be a good price |

At least $50 worth of bondo there...
Seriously, it was OE with a type 4 engine, the booster fan is still fitted. I think maybe a Riviera interior? Not Westy.
16 pictures and not a one of the front drivers side and door.
$1500 subject to inspection.

Well, at $3500 for a non-running bus with a disassembled engine, probably worn out transmission and lots of body issues, I can see why it hasn't sold.
Someone would burn through thousands of dollars to make it drive again. Not seeing it in person, I wouldn't think more than $1k.. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Uhh, why do you say worn out transmission? I think I probably drove more than half a million miles in bays, more than that in Vanagons. The only tranny fails were 091/1, late Vanagons. I've fixed trannies on other early Vanagons, air cooleds with broken trannies. for customers.
Oh, I can take them apart and usually put new nose cone bushings and hockey stick and make them shift more positively. But I've hardly ever seen a bay with a bad tranny.
Does it REALLY cost thousands to rebuild a type 4 engine? I would almost NEVER bother taking apart the bottom end, unless the cam lobes were very, very bad. Not just grooved . They all get that way, but I mean pitted and spalling.
I worked in a shop that built racing motors many years ago and came to observe that the amount spent on a rebuild is almost inversely proportional the satisfaction derived.

Yes. Easily.
even type 1's done nicely at home with the correct parts are getting pricey. |

Picked up this '73 Sportsmobile over the weekend. I've know about it since the mid '90s, (been sitting under a tree in a pasture all this time) but had never seen it. The seller is super cool and just wants to see someone get it back on the road. Massive tow bar built onto the front (yep, we used it to tow it home!), but it's actually in really good condition structurally and the brakes even work. No major rust at all. The interior is all there, but falling apart. Check out that CB whip!

I'll get some, but they are not pretty! It's complete, but in really sad shape. But, the pop top does go up smoothly and the material is in okay shape. A few patches and I think it'd be usable. _________________ 1976 Westy

Interiors were what Westfalia had all over the Riviera and Sportsmobile brands.
Westy fabrics were so strong and so pretty many stayed functional Years longer. I don't know much about Sportsmobile features, tho.

Sportsmobile used particle board and it has not held up well at all. The cushions look dirty, but together. When I post pictures (or from the one below) maybe someone can tell if they are original.

Cool. I'll get some up soon. Here is the only one I have on my phone. Our official German vehicle inspector hard at work.

Picked up a new bus over the weekend 70 one family owned hightop !!! Grandparents used it exclusively as a camper RV never driven as a daily car. One of the most rust free original paint bays I've ever seen....NO rot!!! Was given To the grandson when he graduated high school.. He gutted interior.... put a bunch of hop up parts on the motor and torqued the glandnut on the flywheel with a crescent wrench... 600 miles later it came loose.. He parked it in the barn 5 years ago until I picked it up.... I'm just glad I got it before he completed his plan of painting all the accents purple.. ...

Why cut that one up? It looks solid enough. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Very nice, I want one! When he gutted the interior did he trash everything or is it in a pile in the barn somewhere? _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |
