Hey,
I am very new to the Thing world. I recently purchased a thing for my wife as she has loved them forever. So far the car is a total blast to drive but we are having one problem. For some reason when we go around the corner making a left hand turn gas will come out of the tank. At first I thought it was because we filled the tank too high but now the tank is only half way full and it still does it. Is it just a bad fuel tank cap? Should there be a baffle somewhere in the filler neck? Sorry if this questions has already been brought up. Thank you for any help!

That gas tank cap is the same as a 68 T2- and can be bought new for less than $20. That would be my first guess- _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Is it coming out from the cap only, or from the filler connections in the trunk? Looks for peeled paint, stained paint, or flat out missing paint in the trunk around the filler neck..., and or down the passenger front 1/4 panel....
If it's IN the trunk, The Thing Shop has a "gas smell" kit that will fix you up with all the rubber and clamps you need to refresh that filler system.
If it's Outside at the cap, then replace the seal in the cap, or the whole cap....
I had the same issue(would actually get gas in the passenger footwell from filler leakage), and I went to an in trunk filler neck and eliminated all those connection points(i.e. Points of failure) at the stock filler neck. That route Is not for everyone, but it Is an option...
Good luck! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

I had this happening even after I bought a new cap, I discovered that the rim of the fill opening where the cap seals against was uneven with paint from my recent paint job. I sanded it smooth and that stopped the problem. I've noticed that when I take the cap off to fill there is often gas puddled inside the cap, I think it always sloshes up there. |

Did you close up the outside opening then? I wish I had done that, I didn't think of it at the time. |

Thank you for all of the info. I ordered a gas cap from the thing shop today. I am interested in moving the fill spout to under the hood also. Do you have any pictures of how yours looks?
Thank you |

That's cool, I like that. I like the black inside the trunk too. |
