Erik and Ataraxia,
I was just trying to encourage 68Notch to look into expanding into the LHD market or help someone else.
Coming from a manufacturing background, the key is creating the molds. Once the molds are made the process of making the dashes should be essentially the same. What 68Notch needs is masters (good dashes) to create the molds.
I don't know if 68Notch wants to be in the business of making dashes. Only he can answer that. If not, maybe he would be willing to share his process with someone who is.
68Notch, do you want to expand what you are doing to LHD? Even if it might require procuring masters? |
No worries. This was discussed on earlier pages of this thread. No one wants (no one has?) a dash to send, or wants to pony up $300 for shipping it to him.
I don't even have a type 3, just a dash (well, some lowbacks, and some South African sprints) for my next one
If it were an original one, I'd send it. I'm not using it anyways. But it's not original, and like I said, doesnt make sense to re-pop a re-pop to me.

there is of course, this one "fixed" by just dashes...
I've been in touch with them, long ago. They cant make one with the right grain, or the speaker holes. This one looks good, just need that template to drill out the speaker holes? it's a little too smooth but...

Like I said before, you can buy perfect reproduction early early 911 dashes. They are much more complicated. They run around $2200 last I checked. People say they will pay any price for perfect, but will they really? |

how can it possibly cost 300 to send a dash?
I had rear apron and rear inner guards sent for around 100 euro mark.
apron was 75 EUR from Germany
I had 2 big boxes, about 2k worth of bit and all weighed about 15kg, I recalled it was 285? or maybe bit over 300 USD from ISP.
even had a bumper sent from Philippines with other parts, was $160
I am sure someone wanted to send one its would be under 100 for sure. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

The dashes shipped overseas from here cost about $150-$180 AUD.
Call it maybe $200 to ship a dash from USA to Perth?
Best incentive I think I can offer is that if someone were prepared to ship me a suitable dash pad to mould from then I could probably pay the return shipping on it and throw in a free replica dash with it. So whomever is prepared to do this would come out ahead if they sell the replica?
Making another set of moulds like this would cost me about $1000 in materials and a lot of labour. If I were making such tooling for a customer it might be worth about $10000.
Considering the work in these it makes most sense market wise to do a non wrap around dash as are the current RHD version. _________________ John

Coming from a machine tool background - the molds are also the most expensive part...and that's where people who 'can' make them usually bail on the process. Back five or six years ago, I inquired with several customers in Michigan and Ontario about making a mold if I bought and provided the machine tools to cut the molds.
The cost was still well over $10k to make the molds and set up the process for prototypes, make changes and create a final product because they're basically being reverse engineered so the process is twice as much work.
As Erik mentioned, we've discussed earlier in this thread that the shipping cost and the risk of shipping such a fragile item 1/2 way around the world is too great for people who have an early dash. Insurance will get the money back if it's damaged but finding a replacement is the issue.
I know that if I were to ship a wrap dash any distance that it'd be very well over packed-increasing the dimensional weight rate, which would drive up the cost of shipment...I calculated the cost to ship to Australia a while ago and it was near $300 by the time freight, dimensional weight and insurance were figured in as a total.
With regard to early wrap dashes, they sell in the $500+ range for a used one with minor damage...and have been seen as high as $1500-1800 for a NOS unit once shipping costs are figured in.
In the end, there is a market for the (properly made/correct grain/speaker holes) early wrap dash in a repop...but finding a 'master' is going to be the hard part. The people who have them don't want to sell them or take the risk that it'll be damaged in transit. |

Would a wrap around and a '66 or N version solid grille dash with minor cracking issues be of help? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Tram, they need to be very good, the process will reproduce every little detail. My current moulding do have one very small crack reproduced from the original that is right on the front edge in front of the speedo hood and mostly out of sight but this one is pretty much a hairline and not opened up at all so I thought it quite acceptable and even authentic.
Take some pics of the cracks for me. _________________ John

I only have a late NOS dash with the raised speaker section. If you ever need that, I would ship it to you. GREAT work you're doing. _________________ Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end

the lip remember, early one doesn't fit late cars. Not sure how you would mod that part it without butchering the dash.
otherwise I would. its just 4 holes, star clips and rectangle hole to be cut out in the middle for the grille to pop on. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I am going to check if they fit the late car tomorrow. I am hoping the fwd tabs just sit in that C channel across the front?? _________________ John

iirc the tabs where too thick? wrong angle or something.
That was a while ago, maybe you can make better sense of it. Perhaps make a new mould hybrid between you current dash and sections of the late dash to suit?
Don't know how complex that would be to make. I'm more than sure you can call that judgment. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I finally got around to fitting my dash top which I bought about a year ago. The fit is absolutely spot on and it looks great. (The mark by the grab handle is just flash from my iPhone there's nothing there in reality)
