Hi guys,
I am about the paint my car. Original birth certificate color is Prairie Beige L-378 but I do not like this color much. I do prefer Polar Silver L-324.
What you guys suggest?
Thanks! _________________ 1957 Typ 113 - Polarsilver

in 1974, I painted a '52 Asure Blue Zwitter, black... removed every little part before repainting... has been black for 42 of it's 64 years... love it still... can't tell it was ever blue.

What they said. Paint it how you want it.
I painted my '54 with a '49-'50 color (L51 Bordeaux red). For a long time when people asked me if that was an original color I'd explain the age difference. I finally decided to simply say it's an original VW color, no further detail necessary. Outside of a serious car show, with fanatically serious participants, no one cares about authenticity, they just like the look. I love the way mine looks and I get compliments on the color literally every day. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

If you are unsure, choose the original paint.
If you want polar silver, its your car 😎 _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

Im in your shoes as I have a rare ultra maroon color that I can't stand to repaint. I want to go either agave or azure. But in the end it's your car and unless it's an absolute show car who cares... Go with the polar silver as it's such a nice color. |

it depends on what you are doing with your car.
Are you restoring it completely ? if so, make it beige like VW intended.
If you are just fixing it up and driving it,then paint it whatever color you like. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1

I am restoring it completely. I have the feeling to repaint as VW did originally. But Polar Silver was also a color for that period. The real problem color is difficult.. Imagine you look at your garage a car with a color you really dont like? _________________ 1957 Typ 113 - Polarsilver

I get your dilemma.
I would want it the original color, but damn, prairie beige is so darn boring, and just plain ugly.
Paint it polar silver. I love that color. It's correct for 54.
And then everytime you look at your car you'll love it that much more.
My car is ultramaroon and I just love it so I lucked out. If I had a prairie beige car, I'd be painting it ultramaroon or polar silver. So there's that _________________ Charmaine

Break the mold, let an original color grow on you... : )
...Or just go with Stratos Silver.

I bet there are more restored black oval window Bugs than VW actual built. Mine is one, it was originally Diamond Green (L412.) The previous owner did the change, I haven't changed a car color since high school. I voted Prairie Beige mostly because I don't personally care for Stratos Silver (sorry.) _________________

On behalf of all the Prarie Beige owners, I'll thank you for that.
I like the color. Plus, there's ways to set it off, like two-toning the rims red and beige and going with a red interior. Nobody would scoff at that combination!
I vote to keep it as The Creators intended. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I went through the same dilemma when it came time to paint my car too. I restored the car back to orignal except for the paint and interior. It was originally Stratos Silver with blue interior. I have always loved the Polar Silver and red interior color combo and decided to go with that. My feeling was that if I walked in to a VW dealership in 1956 what color combo would I choose. I'm happy with my choice.

I like the Polar Silver with Red too, it was my choice when I restored (or my attempt to restore) my '57 back in the mid 80's (seems I never saw any this color back then). Still like the color especially how the light / shadows highlight the body sculpting with this color.
