|

I have a pre-67 wiper motor with a 12V conversion armature within it. Want to bench-test it with my 12V battery (separate from switch) before I install it.
Have terminals 54/31b/54d. To which do I connect (-) and to which do I connect (+) testing leads from my battery?
Have seen Glutamoto's wiring diagrams, which are very helpful, but can't make out answer to my question.
Best,

I want to test directly with my battery, not my switch... _________________ 1 great wife

This diagram might be easier to understand.
Connect (+) to 54d. and connect (-) to the case of the motor (31). |

Well, I verified that the motor works, both on the constant and "intermittent" circuits by connecting the (-) battery lead to the motor body and touching the (+) battery lead - separately - to motor terminals 54 and 54d. Then installed motor/transom assembly into body.
Next, I connected the wires between the 1959 motor (converted to 12V) and the 1967 (6-connector) switch (using Glutamodo's 2nd diagram in link below), installed switch, then power. Made sure there is some bare metal for switch to ground to and installed the grounding wire from back of switch to ash tray holder screw.
Triple-checked connections.

Problem is that the motor will not switch off in any of the three positions.
Is my switch bad, should I made a better bare spot on the dash for a better switch ground, or is it something else?
Best,

The switch shown is a 67. Terminal numbers are correct for the switch.
Trick is wiring the motor.. 53a on the switch goes to 54 on the motor (according to his diagram. Always hot park power)
53 on the switch goes to 54d on the motor.
31b on the switch goes to 31b on the motor.
Power comes from fuse block and goes to wiper switch 30
Disregard the wire coming from switch 53b. It won't exist on your setup.
If it parks I low position and wipes on low speed in OFF, then switch the 54 and 54d wires on the motor. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

The switch came with the car when I bought it back in ~1979, and up to when I disassembled it for a pan-off restoration, the set-up worked fine. Unfortunately, I disconnected the switch/motor wires for storage, which I should not have done in retrospect.
I checked your text and Glutamodo's diagram, along with my hand-drawn diagram, and all connections are properly made.
One reason that I like Glutamodo's diagram, and using the pre-1967 motor and 1967 switch combination, is that his third diagram indicates using 2 voltage dropping resistors (no mention on Ohms of either resistor) to get a 2-speed operation , which I eventually would like to get going.
But for now I would like to just get the one-speed operation working...

I can't help you with the resistor, but...
This is a '67 switch drawn hooked up to your motor
If the wipers don't shutoff on the high position on the switch, then for sure the switch is bad. Nothing is connected to the motor from the high position of the switch on my diagram. The wipers should just stop and stay when you switch to high.
If it doesn't park and shutoff in the Off position, you have crud in the limit switches behind the terminals on the motor and they need to be cleaned or replace the motor. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

I'll try your diagram next. Motor will park itself, so I suppose the internal contacts are OK...

Finally made time to SLOWLY test both switch/motor separately. Both work fine separately. Installed and realized that I had switched the wires that go to motor terminals 54 and 54d (DOH!). After correcting problem, still did not work.
Used my clip/testing wire to temporarily ground motor better (mounting bolt brass clip) and realized that motor was not grounding sufficiently. Connected new ground wire from brass clip to cigar lighter ground connection and now wiper works just fine!
Plan to add an in-line resistor to the first position switch connector for a dual-speed wiper (fancy!).
Hope this helps others...

Yeah, considering that it's been over a hundred degrees or so over the past month and my shop swamp cooler recently died, it's been hard to get motivated...

It sound strange to me, a bad motor grounding is not a cause of non-stop wiper.
I would bet you problem was a bad ground of the switch; its ground is to short quickly the "31b" terminal of the motor to suddenly block it and avoid a re-start. |

No, it was a bad ground at the motor, as confirmed when I attached and then removed a wire from the front transom mounting clip (brass?) to the ignition switch mounting bolt, then installed wire as described.
Body had been completely re-painted as part of a pan-off restoration and the transom bolt mounting threads likely still have some fresh paint on them.
