Anyone have a suggestions about what kind of stereo will fit in my 1972 Squareback. Most manufacturers don't list this car and I cant be without my tunes! |

What are you looking for? MP3? iPhone? Sat Radio? CD? AM/FM? 8-track?
In any case, your choice is more where to mount it. Some put it in the glovebox. Some use the standard DIN-size bracket. Some who use their iPhone or other device hide the head unit under a seat and just run the patch cord, or even use a bluetooth interface and hide it all. Some make a custom center console or hand it off the lower dash lip like the stock radio. Unlike a Bug, there is not an easy standard cutout. |

All I need is the radio and an Aux. I was looking at the Custom Auto Sound USA-230. I wasn't sure where it is normally mounted. The dash really has no stereo mount and there isn't a lot of info on the squareback and esp the 72 for some reason. I've seen them mounted under the dash but that seems aesthetically clunky. I think I'll look for a console. Do you have any suggestions for that? Thanks for the info brother. |

The stock radio used a plastic bracket held at the front with two screws into the lower dash lip, and in the back (towards front of the car) by a bracket that sort of squeezed into a pair of tabs on the plastic air blower housing. Not very suitable to a non-stock radio.
Some folks here have built consoles for gauges and/or a radio... search the Type 3 accessories gallery, they might be there. |

My 73 SB came with the radio and mount , the mount was metal and held at the dash bottom lip and used that air box tab. I had a older AM/FM cassette deck started with a B that fit but once it wore out none of the new radios would fit well without building something special they were larger and deeper with that slide in dash bracket . I never used the glove box so that's where I stuck mine. |
