So. I finally got my 3rib in along with my 3x3's. should I need to be running longer axel shafts as well? I'm running bus flanges. |

19 1/4" is what is sold as a standard length.
Measuring is the only way to really know.
I had to shorten mine to keep them for hitting the inside of the flanges. _________________ Joseph

Yes with 3" longer arms on each side your will need longer axles. _________________ It's not the size of your shop, it's what comes out of it that counts.

Using 3x3's... type 2 c/v's... you can use stock bus axle shafts if you add a "grease ring" to one end of the axle shaft.

I'm runnin 002 trans... 3x3's... type 2 flanges... prepped type 2 c/v's... type 2 stock axles...
I suggest you also remove one outside "c" clip on the inboard c/v (trans side) to allow the axle shafts to "float"... @ full compression I still have bout 1/4" play in axle travel. I have cycled this suspension numerous times @ 10" of travel with no binding or pullout.
Works for me.

I just put those spacers on, the PO welded the area where the snap ring goes.....on both sides of the axel. Looks like I need a new one. |

I am building an off road rail with a Type 1 torsion housing, 3 rib bus trans, Type 2 CV joints, bus axles, and 2-1/2 x 2-1/2" tubular trailing arms made for me years ago by Blind Chicken Racing. He said that those arms should allow me to use stock bus axles with no mods. However, no matter how I shim and/or adjust things, I have almost ZERO end play on the axles at 1/2 (midway) suspension travel. The end play is good at full compression or extension of the suspension.
What's the fix? How do I shorten the axles by just a little?? Will leaving off one "C" clip do the trick??

I wrote my question late last night when I was tired. I now realize that leaving off an axle "C" clip would no good in my case. What probably needs to happen is to machine the shoulder off of the axle to allow the axle to penetrate the CV joint farther. However, I have heard that this can weaken the axle and cause it to break.
Ideas? Comments?

Is this with measuring the axle length and then comparing the distance between the inner and outer CV cups when they are straight across?
Or is this what you are feeling in your CV joints?
Grinding the stop off the axles was done in the past. This was done in the early days of off road racing. The people that did found out very quickly that it would cause the axle to break.
SwayAway came out with axles that did not have the inner stop and made out of material that would twist to absorb shock loads.
Empi axles are close the SwayAway and have work well for me now for over 8 years on my buggy for street and off road driving including prerunning desert races.
If you plan on keeping your stock axles I would recommend boring out the center of the CV start so it slips over the stop on the axle.
With both the SwayAway and Empi axles you can cut them shorter and still have enough spline length and you can cut a new snap ring groove in the axles. _________________ Joseph

Hey, thanks for the info. I hadn't thought about machining out a bit of the CV joint to let the axle slide farther in. Sometimes it just takes a fresh, "outside looking in" viewpoint, and I appreciate it. One question though. I am assuming that won't weaken the CV enough to worry about? It's just a play buggy, but it will have a fairly healthy bored and stroked Type 4 engine in it....
Oh, I was checking it mocked up with the axles and CV's installed, not measuring.

If you are bottoming out a CV they will break the cage holding the balls. Personal experience from the early 1970s showed me this when I slid into a tree with the back wheel during a timed run event.
Empi has chromoly cages for type II CV joints that are much better than stock.
Make sure this cannot happen. Mocking up the suspension is very important. _________________ Joseph
