Dual purpose side markers with one bulb..

So not sure if someone has already done this or posted something similar....but I couldn't find much info on this.

My 66 is US spec, so all that factory "key in one position and turn signal switch on" stuff doesn't apply. (although I do have the euro parts to do it) I thought this was far more useful in today's traffic.

Thanks to a thread on here I as able to install the side markers in the correct location with ease. Thanks guys!

Originally I wired up my side markers to be turn signals. Not real thrilled with the driving at night thing....I decided to see if I could figure out how to get them to do both. Running light and turn signals at the same time.

I used a few relays and an old Hella relay box that had a busted off pin so it would never work again anyways. With a little logical thinking (I know alot about electronics and relay logic) I came up with this....

It all fit quite nicely in the original Hella relay box with only some slight, easy modifications to the new relays.

Then I found a nice, out of the way spot to mount it. I decided the easiest way to do it was here on the left side on the flat panel.

Ran a couple wires from the original flasher box to this new box and then the taillight terminal off the fuse box.

Viola! It works perfectly!

If I ever sell this car....the next owner is going to be scratching their head if they even need to do electrical work.
I think the install turned out pretty clean. If I can figure out how to upload a video I will.

Very cool.

If I bought a car and saw that setup I would be like WTF, is this some sort of dealer add-on? Super clean.

Thanks. I am super anal about wiring. I tried to use the factory color coded wiring and crimp on connectors too so someone one day will indeed be scratching their head as to wtf is going on. I think I've owned far too many rat nest wired cars over the years. Everyone is a VW electrician after all.....

Mike Fischer...if you want to send me a Hella relay box I'll make one for you and we can trade stuff for it....I have far too many cars to not need some trades for stuff...

Just a technical note . Italian versions of type 3 were wired similarly at the factory ,with the exception that the side markers acted only as blinkers not running lights .
I think a few other Euro versions were similar . This info is available in the technical section under M codes.
