Hi Everybody,
I have an 81 2 litre fuel injected vanagon. Was running great last year but this year she won't idle well when cold. Seems to idle fine once the engine is run for 10 minutes but before that it wants to stall. It will idle fine about 10 seconds then the oil pressure light comes on, idle slows and van shakes. Sometimes it will rev back up to a proper idle and sometimes it stalls right out. What things should I be checking here?
Also my defrost fan suddenly quit working...fuses are fine, is there a relay for the fan?
Thanks! _________________ 68 vw beetle

Check the aux air valve. They can get dirty and stick closed( poor cold idle) or stick open( good cold start, but engine surges at idle after it is warm like it has a vacuum leak).

Thanks Hans,
Is it possible to take that apart and clean it? Or is there a test I can do to make sure it working properly? _________________ 68 vw beetle

Sure, you can spray it out with carb cleaner. There are some threads here if you do a search on how to test it.

I just wanted to follow up on this post in case others have the same problem. The idling issue soon returned and got worse so it wouldn't idle even at temperature. I bit the bullet and bought a new auxiliary air regulator from bus depot. It cost me almost $300 by the time it arrived at my door in Canada what with the crappy exchange rate, shipping and (what ever happened to free trade) duties & taxes. I just installed it and she fired right up, idled really high for a minute (needed to warm up as it's only about 2 degrees today) then eventually settled into a nice steady idle. Looks like that solved the problem.
Looking into the regulator at the valve (both valves left outside so very cold) my old one had only a small opening and the brand new one was wide open.
A note about this part, http://www.busdepot.com/049133453-42
The description mentions they had been rebranded by another manufacturer. The unit I received has the Nissan logo on it. _________________ 68 vw beetle

Hello everyone, the problem persists.
replacing the aux air regulator seemed to work great for a couple of weeks but it now is back to stalling when I am at a stop and a very rough idle which surges sometimes.
Today I sprayed some carb cleaner on the intake manifold gasket just in front of the fuel injectors. When I sprayed on cylider 2 the rpms did go up. Spraying cylinder 3 caused the engine to stall. Should I assume I have leaking manifold gaskets? Could this have been my problem all along?
I tightened the nuts but it doesn't seem to have helped. _________________ 68 vw beetle

Problem solved. I removed the intake manifold to find two very obviously blown gaskets. Replaced. Haven't heard it run this well since I bought it. Thank you all for your help. _________________ 68 vw beetle
