When I replaced my strut mount bearing assemblies, my original grease caps for the top wouldn't fit into the hole at the top. I looked and apparently the strut mount tops were different and had a slope which prevented the caps from snapping in. All they would do is sit there and you could flick them with your finger and they'd fall out. I didn't want to silicone them on or anything so I came up with an idea.

I'm into creating objects in 3D software so I made some grease caps with an extended bottom on them to reach the depths to fit snug. Found a website that you could upload the 3D model to and have printed for a price. I haven't tested these yet but I'm sure they'll be fine. Just thought I'd share this.

I've revised these a little and made them smoother and thicker. May order them soon.

Mesh appears fairly coarse, but should work fine.
If known, could you share what make/model printer was used?

Hrm, the ones I made aren't wide and length enough, seems these strut mounts have a wider hole. I should of tested this first :(. The printer is at shapeways.com. I dunno what they use.

Here are the other parts I'm excited about getting in that I made. Little pieces always breaking so I made some to replace them :).

Per site's video, they have at least 1ea EOSINT & EOS SLS (selective laser sintering) machines.

Nice.

How about the little plastic mechanical advance spring retainers in distributors.
Any way to make those? Or would they be too small for the printer definition?

I'm sure loads of people need those...

I'd need to find one to get measurements for creating it in 3D.

It cost about 5 dollars and something for them to make in white and then shipping was reasonable, but I had gotten 2 of them the total came out like around 15 dollars for the whole order.

I'm trying to setup the shop option they have so that anyone can buy them from them.

Awesome! Just placed an order for one. What the heck, I've had one original one turn to cookie crumbs when I removed the steering wheel. The original one I have in there now will do the same eventually.

I'll post a picture of it when it arrives.

Bet you could place an ad for it and lots of folks here will buy one.

Cool, thanks for ordering one. I haven't installed one of them yet, but I ordered another for myself just the other day because I thickened the wall of it by about half a millimeter to match up more with the original I have.

That's kind of why I wanted to make one instead of an original I had to track down. I know that they are 40+ years old and plastic can't hold out that long.

I remember when I first disassembled my steering wheel column to install a new ignition switch. The spacer just fell apart into 10 pieces, I tried gluing it back together several times but it just came to the point that glue wasn't going to fix it. So I've been driving around without one for years wondering what difference it could make if it had one.

I'm all about the fine details of these cars, any tiny piece that I can restore to stock or near stock makes me feel that future generations can know what it was like stock. It's actually a pet peeve of mine that, if I were to ever sell my car, the new owner would have to agree to keep it stock. heh

Well I uploaded the model to the shapeways website and it's having trouble viewing the model in their program. :( And it flags a "wall thickness" issue.

My updated version of the steering wheel 3D printed part came in and I installed it. Fits great. I had forgot that it stretches over the metal bushing thing and it's not suppose to come all the way to the c-clip. Mine fell out 4 years ago when I first got the car, it's nice to have something back there even if it's a useless part.

Yep, occasionally on right turns and when flashing the brights. Ihave a cheap aftermarket turn signal.assembly that the W-spring popped out of months ago.

Did you install the aftermarket turn signal switch or did someone else? There are these 2 metal spacer tubes that are needed to use from the old switch into the new one to avoid over tightening and crushing on the right side of the turn signal switch. The spacer that goes in the center of the wheel won't make a difference with the horn problem. Something may be too tight or grounding when you pull back on the switch to toggle the brights and when the switch is flipped to the up position.
