So I was just replacing my jugs and piston and when I when to put my heads on one didn't seem to fit down as far as the other side. So I pulled them off switched them around to see if it was the jugs not right or the heads. As you can see from the pictures there is a difference on how the head sits. So do I worry about this, do I shim the other side so I have the same height for both sides. Or something maybe?

Are they different castings? Could be the picture, but the one on the right looks to have one less cooling fin then the left.

Well Stan you were right on, cooling fines are pretty much the same but they are different castings. One says Mexico the other says 2BR. So should I use them or try and find a matching pair?

The 043 mexico head originally had a step in the chamber, the 040 did not. Yes you should CC the heads to make sure they match

I would never mix casting numbers on heads and run, for they have
different flow characteristics even if you match the combustion cc volume:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=573099

Pick your best head, the 043 or the 040 and buy another matching
casting number head, and have flycut to the same depth/cc volume and sell the other one

I think you will find they are a set.
If you told the whole part number the might be more to say about it.
