1600cc Motor with a 6v 40hp flywheel so it can fit in my 55 oval... problem is the 6v starter hardly turns over and seems like the battery doesn't have enough juice either. Even tried using a 12v battery to see if the extra juice might turn it over and nothing. Starter no good or wiring problem? Thanks...

Hi,

Start by assuming the wiring is the problem (its cheaper), clean all the connections, battery to starter, battery to ground, transaxle to ground, etc. By clean, I mean remove and wire brush until both the terminal on the wire and the spot it connects to are shiny and bright.

Has this just started happening? If so, has the weather changed on you? maybe getting cold? Cold slows everything down, the motor oil is thick, the starter lubrication is thick, etc.
You may need to pull the starter and rebuild it if all the connections check out good.

Good Luck
Dave

Is it the original wiring harness? The ends of the wires in my harness were pretty corroded, looked like the statue of liberty.

Could be anything in the electrical system. Since you had no luck with installing a 12 volt battery it probably is the starter and/or wiring that is causing the problem.
Cleaning BOTH ends of the battery cables would be the first step and if either/both of these cables have a repair battery clamp bolted to them it is time to get a new cable.

You can see those repair clamps and a good step by step for general automotive electrical problems:

I had same problem ground ground ground. I had to put in a new ground step on the transaxle and clean all ground connects. 6 volt needs an excellent ground. Hope I made my point. God luck

Guessing it was a ground strap, and not a "ground step" that did the trick. Laughing

Good to hear that it did the trick!

Can also be a starter bushing needing to be lubed. If your grounds are not shiny, that little extra mechanical resistance can be the tipping point of a no start.

It can be either the rear bushing in the transaxle or the bushing in the front of the standard non-supported starter needing lube or just worn out. BTDT! With a 6 volt starter in a 12 volt system the drag in the starter was bad enough to keep the coil from firing by pulling down the voltage too much. Even though the engine turned over well. The front bushing was too worn out, allowing the armature to rub inside the field coils inside....

... same exact thing happened with my '54... I got all the same advise, you got in this thread. Finally, I gave up and pushed the car aside and bought a great running '55 with a 36 horse. The fifty four is appreciating daily. I don't even think about it anymore.
