I have a 74 that is mainly stock. I noticed that there is not a wire going to the reverse light switch on the transmission housing. I did find 3 loose wires in the car near the battery. They all have blades on them, but none are hot. It looks like they are coming from the engine bay into the car. I can't figure out what they are or where they go? I have a manual, but it only shows Type1 diagram as well as Karmann Ghia? Does anyone have a diagram for the 74? I am trying to chase a lot of loose wires in this car. I think it was a tow vehicle because of it has 2 plugs, one in the front and one in the back that look like they are for sockets.

The reverse light wires are all black.
In stock form, the reverse light circuit picks up +12V from Terminal 15 of the ignition coil. There is an inline fuse (8A) clipped right next to the coil. From the fuse, a black wire carries +12V to the switch on the transaxle. With the transmission in reverse (and the ignition switched on), the +12V current continues back to the reverse lights.

The 2 sockets could have been for the power winch. Do they have 2 prongs?

Remember that the Thing had a diagnostic circuit that is now useless. The wires that are part of the test circuit have a stripe on the insulation meaning the wire has a secondary function in this case test wire. There are a group of test wires in the battery area. If wires you mention have a stripe. Chances are they are test wires....

Thank you for all the replies. This is extremely helpful. I would love to meet you at the Kubel Treffen and pick your brains. Any of you will be there?

Yes. They have 2 prongs each. There's one plug in the back and one in the front

Do you have trailer hitch? Is there a switch on the right dash panel that looks like a switch from a truck with dual tanks? Pictures?
