Anyone know what this thing is. I have seen four of these in my travels to Guatemala and El Salvador. I have only seen one on the street running. I have looked all over the net and can find this. there are some similar but not like this. Thoughts?

Gurgel was my first thought but couldnt find one that looked like this one. Maybe because there are so many parts missing, I couldn't identify. thanks

It's a derivation of a Gurgel X12

Possibly '77-'78 vintage -

looks like a variant of this model.

I admit to having never heard of a Gurgel. quite a lot of goofy looking versions, but several I'd absolutely love to have. There are quite a few that would be great alternatives to the traditional manx clone/style buggys.

Several that look like a cross between a Kubel/country buggy/hummer that would look great with a mid travel suspension. I'd totally rock one of these. were these still on a VW chassis or a box frame chassis like I see some are?

John:

I believe that the Gurgel was built on a dedicated chassis, using VW T1 parts.

Hi,
the Gurgel's are all (but not the the first kit's Form the 60's) factory build with a tube frame laminated in the body, called "Plasteel".
Only the Dacunha Jeg's are based on shortened brasil T1/2 Chassis.
