I finally woke my '73 up this weekend after it'd been parked for over a year in my parents garage. I was actually quite surprised that it only took only a few tries after putting the battery in to get it started. Everything checked out ok except the headlights.
They had been acting up prior to parking it, but now I'm ready to chase down the issue. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to where to start.
First off, my boyfriend has modified the headlights to the circular off road style 2 for regular driving, 2 for "high beam". He installed the high beam with an extra switch on the dash.
They used to all work correctly, but now when you turn the lights on, all 4 come on even when the high beam switch is off( only the lower 2 should come on). One low one is bright like it should be and the rest are barely on. When you turn on the high beam switch, one of the high beam ones comes on bright but the rest are dim.
It seams that there is either interference or a short somewhere in the system. I printed a wiring diagram and fuse diagram, but was wondering where to start. I was thinking to replace the fuses and check and clean the backside of the headlight switch first.
Does anyone have any other ideas of where to start prior to tearing out the whole setup?

Because it's a custom wiring job it's going to be really hard to help you without having the car in front of us.
I'd say for the issue of all lights coming on, play with the combination of the dash switch for the high beams and the high beam switch on the turn signal stalk.
For the issue of one light bright and others dim, I'd check all the grounds and make sure they are tight and clean. |
