Coming home from work today in the Thing, beautiful day birds are singing. Quick stop at Sherwin Williams to get paint, upon startup, slight backfire, very rough running to the point of shaking steering wheel, and idling at higher RPM than normal, like its only on 3 cylinders. Luckily, was only a few blocks to the house. Never done this before, so whats your thoughts? Want to fix by next weekend to go to VW event in Niagara Falls, HELP.

As most people know, I am the resident technoklutz here. However ...

My '71 Super was running like a charm. It became my daily driver when my daughter got her license as she drove my Cabrio until we bought her the dependable disposable car that would last her through college. After we found a Jetta for her, I gave the Super a monthlong rest.

The next nice day, I had the exact same symptoms. I was only 3 miles from the shop, so I thought I could nurse it there so it could be looked at.

That was the last time I ever drove it. The Super went up in flames.

I did a lot of research. The most compelling reason I found was the distributor. There were many complaints since the manufacture of it moved to China. However, that theory was shot down. In fact, all theories were shot down, and by folks I respect. The bothersome thing was these same folks offered no counter-theory of their own.

What did you learn? Nothing to your original question, but hopefully you investigate this without driving it to the point of becoming a bonfire. I wish that experience on no one.

If you haven't found the problem yet, check your spark plug wires.

Spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor, distributor cap, manifold boots, could be a lot of things.
