The license light is one of the many parts from the wartime period hard to
date precisely. Unfortunatelly the literature don't help too much and when
one has an idea more or less clear it appears a apparently respectful
restoration out there that changes it all
This bug from the Hausman collection was built in November 1946 and
wears the right lamp for the military vehicles (until what year?)
But in the same collection there is a 1943 KdF Type 82E with the one used
by the civilian cars, the pre-pope's nose license light, seen ie in the
surfaced 1941 KdF that belonged to Paul Lincke
In other hand I wonder if there is any chance that when the production
stopped in August 1944 some surviving body was used to complete a
Type 1 when the british took the control of the factory? And the last
question that destruction of VW30 prototypes is documented and even
photographed but what about the 44 VW38 and 50 VW39 built. After
the incredible Lithuania find maybe we can still find for some more...
I think it would be great to fill these gaps with a serious special with
photos to support the claims about the changes in the Type 60 from
1940 to 1945 and in the Type 1 from 1946 to 1949 |

Yes it would, however, if you haven't seen this thread, check it out:

A huge number of these cars were rebuilt on a factory remanufacturing line, using scattered parts from many early VWs, making it difficult to determine what is correct for a given date (not to mention that many parts were provisional from one car to the next). We have no way of determining whether a car was remanufactured. Nobody has identified any markings. I wonder if the factory kept records? _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.
