So, nothing much in the way of anything new. I work out in San Francisco 90% of the time (security officer for google) and there have been a ton of events lately pulling me into some weird hours, overnight shifts, and general lack of time. managed to get a few cool pictures though...
Car has been running great! i was getting a solid oil light at idle, but swapped in a new sender from CB and its all good. the old one had begun leaking and was a little loosely crimped inside its housing. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

this engine was definitely a pleasant surprise for sure. the car seems to do well in the heat, and the only irritating issue is flickering oil light after hot idle in traffic (which as we all know is normal, but still maddening) but after coming back up to speed it goes away.
I ordered a set of taps, plugs, 26mm pump, and a full flow cover for the spare block i have in the garage, and I'm going to start prepping the new engine case that will end up either an 1835, 1904, or 1967cc depending on how things go. i will not tolerate a car without working heat, so I'm pretty sure it will stay stock heat exchangers. just need to do some research on how well i can do with them on either 1904 or 1967. 1835 is a little played out, and i like the idea of thickwall 92's on the 1967, but dont want to suffocate the engine. I also started test fitting some tin, i really just need a shroud, oil cooler exhaust tin, sled tins, and a hoover bit really. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

Swapped out my rear shocks that I've been sitting on for two months
These are basic gas shocks from Autozone. they are listed as "classic shock by gabriel" and are pretty nice for the money, i beleive i paid about 19 each for them. I've used them on several other beetles in the past and have been very happy with them. slightly stiffer ride than oil shocks, bit they are nice for handling if you are like me and like to corner a bit agressively...
The original "made in w.germany" VW shocks were still installed, and were shot. the car had a serious floppy-butt issue on bumpy or bad roads, and it is now nice and firm, but not uncomfortable. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

Great read!
I'm not sure why you thought it was a stock 1600. Most 1600s don't have full-flow, a deep sump and vented valve covers. That's usually a good sign there's something more going on.
I don't know why the Pertronix is so disliked, and why so many people seem to fry them. I've used Pertronix on several cars for many years and have never had a failure.
Like: The fog lights and the speaker panel.
Ambivalence: Purple wheels and future lowering job.
Thanks for rescuing this car! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

PO thought it was a stock-displacement rebuild, and I've had a full-flow 36HP pass through my hands before, so stranger things have happened. I don't get my hopes up until I confirm
Pertronix style module is the green one that comes in the Kuhltek brand SVDA distributors, and so far has been trouble free. I keep a spare 009 in the trunk with points "just in case" but I'm also running a ford TFI module that takes the heavy current out of the module, which may or may not contribute to long term reliability.
Purple is sorta my thing, I figure most won't care for it but whatever. Eventual plan is for either stock sport steelies, 914 alloys, or 4-lug cosmics. Just be glad I'm not rattle-bombing the car purple
Lowering will not be extreme, just a little bit. The nose actually sits about two inches higher than the rear right now, and that just will not do. Rear end is staying where it is, my preference is for just a bit of rake at most, nothing crazy. When I dropped the nose on my 71 super the same amount it gave me much better stability on the freeway in windy conditions, so stock height up front is out of the question. Don't worry, I don't care for the logistics of driving a slammed car.
These foglamps are awesome, I have them set up more as driving lamps, and they are excellent for the money, and were super easy to mount. I love how they look, although that isn't the reason I bought them, it sure helps. They have an H3 bulb at 55W each in them, and are powered off of a relay in a spare socket in the fuse/relay console, and switched via rocker switch in the dash next to the defroster switch. Highly recommended!
Speaker panel was a must have. I don't find that the kick panels are that great of a location for speakers unless you run some in the rear to get your primary sound from, the curve of the roof of the car is excellent for acoustics too it seems. I just installed a powered subwoofer under the speaker shelf that fits perfectly, and let's me crossover the low end from the four speakers in the car, letting the sub take over and greatly improving sound quality and less rattles from the fronts. Sounds better than it should, and since I don't blast my music super loud it should last a good while. Very pleased
I just got some urethane bushings for my front end, so hopefully I'll get the time to rebuild my front end soon, and toss in the new struts. While it's all apart I plan to clean up and paint all the suspension bits up front, maybe do some bedliner in the fenderwells, over some semigloss black. I'm trying to hunt down another pair of rear fenders for the car, but keep having issues with people wanting a ton of money for ones worse than mine...
The passenger seat will not flip forward, and after pulling the cover off to inspect it, it appears that the release latch is jammed up on the outside hinge of the seat, and the cable snapped at the release knob lever. I need to tear it apart and get it fixed soon.
This car has quickly become one of my favorites of all the VW's I've driven or owned, it handles great, has a ton of power, has been reliable, and gets great mileage. Once I get it less squirrelly on the freeway in the wind it will be perfect. Here's a boring shot of it at work to hold you all over til the next update...

Well, a lot has happened! I grabbed a pair of 73-only fenders back in october from a guy in my VW club ( Deutschland drivers) for $40, and A couple days before halloween I got rear ended while sitting at a light while on the way home from work, girl in a big nissan truck wasn't paying attention, and slammed into the rear passenger side. Fortunately nobody was hurt, and it only damaged the bumper, fender, and taillight. After over a month of driving around smashed up and covered in tape, they paid me out and I painted the fenders with some Krylon spraypaint, grabbed a pair of taillights, and straightened out my bumper with a mallet. I'm not going fancy on paint until my crescent rust has been fixed. The spraypaint was a very close match, especially after a few weeks of soot from driving 150+ miles daily. The bumper isn't perfect, but it's staying since it's the original.
Took a couple glamour shots (without even washing my car! I was on the way to work a couple blocks away...) over at the Alameda Naval base-
See what I mean aboy needing to drop the front a couple inches? Gotta get that nose down!
Had to replace my Bosch Blue with an MSD coil due to an increasingly troublesome misfire and lack of power, upon test the Bosch was internally shorted from primary to secondary, and only reading 15 ohms from secondary to primary, i suspect an internal insulation breakdown. Since I'm running a TFI module the MSD coil will work fine with my distributor, and has actually noticably increased my MPG a bit
I have a pretty consistent and irritating oil leak from what I suspect to be my oil cooler, hopefully it's just the seals, but from the amount of oil under the engine I may need to do my main seal as well. the entire engine bay is covered in oil from the oil cooler issue. Still haven't found the time to re-do the front end. I've got an irritating wibbly-wobbly in my front end (I can feel it in the steering wheel, otherwise not noticable) from 60-65 MPH, so I just go faster or slow down
All in however, I haven't had any issues more serious than the coil replacement, until I replace the seals I'll just keep adding oil once a week _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

Girl in an SUV "not paying attention..." That's diplomatic! No doubt she was texting...
Nice work on the fenders! Can those MSD coils be used w/a regular compufire points replacement module? _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

A pretty bad oil leak from my main seal and oil cooler was driving me nuts this last month, so with some help at a buddies house we got it out, and it was a bit more of a mess than initially thought...
#3 plug had some pretty bad erosion, otherwise they don't look too bad, I'd like a bit lighter tan on them though. Put in new plugs (went to a BP6HS, was running BP5HS) since it's not only a habit of mine at each engine removal, but with sustained high RPM driving, and my higher voltage ignition system my research pointed to a step colder plug.
Oil cooler did not appear to be leaking, but the seals compressed a bit too much, and one had swollen on the ID. changed them all out since I was in there anyway...
Flywheel seal had a tear in the face, and the spring on the inside had split, it easily slipped over the flywheel by hand. New seal was a nice snug fit, got it oiled up, and tapped it in to the step in the case. Daikin dic in the clutch was soaked and glazed, 67jason was kind enough to give me his spare Sachs disc.
Not shown, is that all of the head nuts other than two or three were loose, as were most of the case bolts. Also, the sideplay on the rocker shafts is larger than I would like, so I need to dig out my shims and set the side play again on my next day off. Everything got a snug with J's torque wrench and the engine went back together.
Yesterday was a long day, but after the fifty mile drive to work this morning the only oil I see is residual mess still under the engine and car. I'll try to get to a carwash soon to pressure wash everything underneath so it's easier to watch if it tries to leak again... _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

Wow! Looks like you caught the fire before it progressed out of hand! That's good news. Any idea what led to the cause of the fire?

I think it was from the Bosch coil misfiring, it must have caused a backfire through the intake... Hard to pinpoint but there were no wires there to start it. I've since replaced the coil due to intermittent issues with it that finally led to it being severely out of spec. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!
