Got a couple of rear torsions I am selling and would like to identify style. One has shock towers which are straight (parallel with the car center line). The other one has the shock towers at an angle. What years swing axle or IRS? The straight one has a cast iron mount for the trans. The other one is a stamping.
Thanks _________________ DDC racing |

IRS started in 68 for US cars. You'll see a mounting point for IRS trailing arms where the frame fork meets the torsion tube. |

Both....Swing axle and CV axle joint cars.. are technically...IRS..
As for the question..
Straight rear shock towers ended 1958 model year
Angled rear shock towers started 1959 model year
1969 and newer (CV Joint/IRS) will have the extra pivot mount welded to the torsion bar housing.
1968 had both swing and CV joint.
1968 was the last year for swing axles manual transaxles in the US market but continued until the end of production it other markets.
1968 was the first year for the Auto Stick which did use the CV joints.
CV joint.. or what is commonly referred as IRS for manual transaxles started for the US market in 1969.

It looks like the cast in bump stop was added in 1960 along with the shorter torsion bars. This means that cars from January 1959 through July 1959 have angled shock mounts but no rear rubber bump stop.

Awesome...I quickly looked ar the PR on OADCP couldn't find it.. ..
I thought I remembered 59 was a split mid change.... but... got tired flipping through web pages for the general date...
The consensus of quick pictures I found between 58's and 59's is where I noted the change..
So I'd say ones built through Dec 1958 have straight towers and all after that towers are angled..
(Note.. I think somewhere along the CV/IRS production an addition upper RIB support was implemented..)
PR ref..
