Has anyone put together a project book, parts list or even a worktable spreadsheet for restoring the cars that we love ?
Even a to do list...
I think it could be very helpful for many of us. _________________ ----------------------

Thanks for the link. It didn't come up in any google search. As far as the thread itself many of the links to information are dead. Even ones here on the samba go nowhere. The thread itself is not what I had in mind, so I think I will add what's on my mind here, rather then a 7 year old thread. _________________ ----------------------

That's a reasonable & fair comment. Trails do go cold on the web. So certainly do share your ideas.
Thanks

I have done a spread sheet for both my cars... I didn't really keep a to do list as both of mine have followed the formula - 1) body work 2) engine - plus getting them road worthy 3) interior 4) extras - performance, modification not essentials but adding fun stuff or changing or adding things I've found necessary after daily driving.
For parts I do a scope of whats needed and that goes on the spread sheet, then I price it at each of the various suppliers and work out where its best to buy from once I've got enough to justify an order.
The worst page is the tab of receipts .. try not to look at that one to much but its necessary for insurance purposes _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

What you did is what I have in mind. I like to see an example if possible. _________________ ----------------------

Here is a screen shot picture of a PDF file I found for restoring a V8. I do believe it could be adapted to our use. It had just about every part of a car broken down and covered.

Intriguing concept bringing out the teacher in me. I think there are some BIG questions to answer before compiling a schedule or spread sheet.
1. The condition fo the car. How bad is it really? Does it need a body-off or superficial restoration?
2. The ultimate aim with the car. Daily driver or concourse d'elegance?
3. Cost of restoration versus value of the car when restored. How much to spend?
4. Availability of funds. How much do I have and how much can I afford to spend? How much of the work can I do myself?
5. Time frame. How much time do I have? How much time can I spend on this project?
6. Support system. How much support am I going to need/receive from family, Ghia friends, aircooled specialist mechanic, panelbeater, painter, auto-electrician, upholsterer, etc.?
7. Space. Do I have a space where I can work on the car and store it during the restoration?
8. The unforeseen and unforeseeable. Do I have the capacity or will to deal with the gremlins that are likely to throw a spanner in the works (sorry about the pun!)?
9. Insurance and safety. Do I have insurance and the necessary safety measures in place?
10. State of mind. Why am I doing this?
The benefit of hindsight. These are the things I should have considered before I committed to my Saving Emiko project. The next stage would be to plan the sequence, which can only be done after working out the answers to the questions above, I think.
In a body-off:
Body & Paint
Chassis (including floor-pans)
Engine & gearbox
Suspension and brakes (including wheels and tyres)
Glass
Chrome & Rubber
Doors (fit, handles and window winder mechanism)
Electrics (including lights and instruments)
Upholstery and seats
Each item on the list will have its own long list of parts and of work to do, and the details on each list will probably be influenced by the questions I posed earlier. But most importantly, the condition of the car and the aim (daily driver or show car) will determine the lengths (and cost) to which one will go in respect of each part of the project. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

99% of what you're saying, I agree with. I'm not sure if I would ever think to put a "value" on the car as part of the restoration. If it ended up a driver, or a show car or something in between the list I have in mind would still apply. I guess it comes down to skill, money, or just how far you want to take things.
I did find this PDF which covers much of what I was thinking about. It is a very long well thought out file. Don't let the title of the PDF file fool you.
