Last nights achievements were. Injectors re-installed, all new fuel hoses, Installed a mechanical fuel pressure gauge so I can monitor pressure at any time, re-installed MPS with new mounts, installed fuel pump with new mounts, new master cyl installed, and than ran out of fuel hose to plumb the rest. Also thanks to Jim Adney for the heads up on the fuel neck overflow hose. it was destroyed rotten. so I have one of those coming for replacement too. So progress is progress.. _________________ My build thread(The desert Rat). http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653395 |

Getting pretty excited, I'm down to hooking up the two hoses to the bottom of the fuel tank, pour some gas in and than I get to see if this project will run.. While I had the tank still out I thought I would see if the fuel pump would run with key cycle since accessibility at this point is much better than with the tank installed. Well by no surprise...Turned the key and Nothing.. Checked the plug at the pump, Nothing.. So started with main relay.. Found no wire at terminal 30, so that = no +battery voltage supplied to relay. Made up a wire to battery and bingo, relay kicked over that allowed current to be sent to the fuel pump relay. Moved onto fuel pump relay and found that I had battery voltage, had ignition voltage, but had poor ground from computer. Cleaned the grounds... BAM relay works and fuel pump kicks on.. SWEET... Than I ran out of play time and quit for the night.. _________________ My build thread(The desert Rat). http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653395 |

YES! That will be the plan my friend. This weekend hopefully will be a successful weekend on the desert rat. Goal is to get it running, and hopefully well. Than hit the brakes. I've already installed a new master cyl, new front soft hoses. Checked front caliper operation using compressed air. They seem to work. Still need to remove rear drums, check shoes and hardware, replace rear soft hoses, inspect and/or replace wheel cyl's.. So we'll see how far I get.. I will post progress and pics.. Down to a week and a couple of days for Woodburn show.. If that falls apart I'll shoot for the Fathers day show here in Eugene. _________________ My build thread(The desert Rat). http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653395 |

when you checked the injectors with the 9 volt batter, were they still in the car, or had you removed them? _________________ T-roy

did you pull the injectors while the engine was in the car? Wondering how difficult that is. I should have done so when I had the engine out. _________________ T-roy

Well today after work is the big day to see if we have success in this desert rat starting.. I received in the mail yesterday from Jim Adney my improved fuel tank overflow/vent hose to install. Than just need to hook up the two hoses to the bottom of the tank add some gas and give it a go.. I'll let ya all know and a video.. _________________ My build thread(The desert Rat). http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653395 |

Sitting here at work thinking about any possible problems I may run into this afternoon. I've replaced every rubber hose except the 4 connecting ones at the intake plenum. they look to be in good shape, however they can be turned by hand. I was going to just put clamps on them, but thought maybe they were a flex joint as such? how concerned should I be on these as a substantial vacuum leak source? BTW this pic is not current.

Found a new delphi pump. A cross referenced one from the airtex E2000. Got it installed kind of a pain to figure out how to and where to mount it. But it's done. Videos are uploading now for the attempted starting, stay tuned.. _________________ My build thread(The desert Rat). http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653395 |
