It's been in the shop forever, constantly getting bumped in line due to other cars coming in. But I visited it today and it is primered and the door interiors and sills have been painted. Should get a full spray next week. Body will be the original rare Kasan Red but going with a white roof.

Then I'll tackle the interior once I get it home.

Are they going to finish taking the dents out of both doors first?

Not dents. Excessive dark spots through the primer due to filler from the first body guy who had the car a year before I finally moved it.

But, please, point out the negatives in my neverending, over budget project. Makes me feel really good about it.

What paint are you using, a 2 stage contemporary product or a single stage approximation of our original paint? Personally I like the single stage look, but its very subjective.

Excuse me, but you are the one who posted pictures for people to comment on – which includes comments on if we see anything amiss.

Bobnotch has painted MANY cars, and he noticed what looks like waves on the doors (even while in primer) and he brought it to your attention so you could take a look at that before the paint goes on and it’s too late to correct. That is not being negative – that is being helpful.

And another helpful hint; your side and back windows pop out quite easily, and if your shop took them out – the result would be a much more professional looking paint job versus taping over the window seals.

Intrinsic: I went with 2 stage for the durability. It will likely end up outside with a good car cover since we use our 2 car garage for our daily drivers. If I didn't have a four year old to load/unload daily into the car in heat/rain/snow, I'd leave my SUV outside and park the square inside.

What you mean there is your typical Type 3 rescue. Welcome to the club. Smile

And yeah, better to point possible issues out now than after the nice, shiny paint REALLY makes it show!

Raider: Thank you for your comment. I understand Bobnotch is one of the most experienced posters on here, and I always read his comments on any thread as they are some of the most informed and informative. I felt his comment could have been stated better and just rubbed me wrong in an already frustrated mood over the project. My car is not perfect and I have limited/no funds left to work on it. I don't have the skills to do bodywork myself. The first shop badly used a lot of filler and the second shop is doing their best to make it good. I'm in far too deep on the car and haven't even had it at home in over a year and a half because of both shops sitting on it rather than working on it. So I'm frustrated at the project and was excited to see some progress yesterday and see a possible end to the bodywork so I can eventually get it home and begin working through the interior on my own.

The rubber has been removed from the side and rear windows and the front glass has been removed. Do you not feel this is enough to get a good paint job? It was the decision of the paint shop and the glass guy who came to remove the seals to leave the glass in place without the rubber. If that will seriously impede getting good paint on there I can call to get the glass fully removed, at the expense likely of being delayed longer.

The rubber holds the glass in. What's holding your glass in now?

From your picture it appears the seal was in place and taped. My mistake.
If they removed the glass and seal, then reinstalled the glass somehow without the seal in order to stop paint from entering the inside of the car - then you should be good to go. (except now someone will have to remove the paint off the glass) Not having the seals in place allows the paint to cover where the seal resides, and then when you reinstall the glass with the seal it will look as perfect as the factory did it.

Restorations can be very frustrating unless you have deep pockets. And how much you decide to spend on body and paint really effects the end product. Unless your talented and doing the work yourself.

When I saw Bob's comment I too thought it came off a little strong. He normally does not sound that way. And pictures can be very deceiving. But I am sure his intentions were good. He has doled out a lot of good advice.

The suggestions made here are trying to get you the best finished product. And taking out the windows and other things add to it.

But in the end it is up to you of course.

I personally think there are two options in Restorations. Go deep or go shallow. Meaning do it right or do it cheap. The in between is never very satisfying.

Well your square is coming along. I do have a suggestion, ask the shop if you could help and maybe cut your bill down a bit. Yeah I know most shops will not allow it, but ask.

Reminds me of a sign in a repair shop about 30 years ago:

Quote:
LABOR RATE: $20 PER HOUR
IF YOU WAIT: $25 PER HOUR
IF YOU WATCH: $35 PER HOUR
IF YOU HELP: $100 PER HOUR

I think I would suggest removing the door window scrapers/trim. It can move, and a paint line will be very noticeable there. Tough to R&R (and be careful since they are NLA or $$$), but worth it: you will notice every time you get in the car!

By the way, I can understand your fatigue and frustration. Take a day or two away from the car. Get refreshed, and see things in a new light. You may let go of some worries, find a thing or two you want to put some extra effort into now that you are re-energized. You need that a couple of times in any project.

Thanks everyone. I'll definitely have time away from it. I generally go 2-3 months between 'visitations'. They 'say' it will get painted next week... we'll see. Once it is painted it goes back to the first shop to get put back together.

I was planning on helping with the reassembly after painting as the shop owner is very nice and appreciates the hand, but after 3.5 years of self employment I start a new job next week which won't afford me the time to make the 40 minute drive each way to his shop to help.

I'm distracting myself by looking at interior options. I had colors all picked out then saw 69 Fastback's grey interior and am really liking it.

I'm sorry if I came off a little strong, but I was trying to help. It might have just been the angle the pics were taken too, that made it look worse than it really is. But, I was looking at the body line of the door itself, and saw the waves. Once painted, those spots will stick out like a sore thumb (BTDT many times, and had to fix it out of pocket). Sometimes just having a fresh set of eyes will pick out things you didn't see. I didn't mean to kill your enthusian, as it's looking good, but sometimes it's better to catch something before hand, then wait until it's too late.

And as others have already pointed out, having the glass out makes for a better finish, in that the repop seals don't always fit like the old ones did. Plus, it allows you to make sure there's no rust hiding under them. I've seen it before, and I'll see it again, rust hiding under seals. The body shop should use paper covered cardboard taped in from the inside, so the outside looks better.

But, if you're happy with their work, that's all that matters. People like myself, Dave, Tram, and a bunch of others here will take the extra time to get the details right. Because once the paint goes on, you're stuck with what you have. Yes, it can be fixed, but that's extra cost too. Much more extra cost. I also realize you're chomping at the bit to put it back together, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet, and take care of stuff as you come across it. Look at Leo's or Monte's Squares as examples. Both had issues along the way, and both stepped back and took care of them, then moved on. Both cars look absolutely beautiful too.
