Someone stated that only 150 auto tranny type 3's were produced. That seems hard to believe (too low). Does anyone know? I have one and wondering how rare it is. _________________ T-roy

150? No.
1500? No.
15,000? No, but getting closer.
They were rare in Europe. But in the states they were more popular. Out of the 600K or so imported, I would expect that at least 10% were automatics, but only after 1969. So maybe 40-50,000?
(These numbers are from memory; a better look at the Samba production figures/import figures can improve it.) |

There were 986,345 produced from 1969 to 1973, which covers the automatic years. If 25% of those were automatic, that gives about 246,000 as a round number. Certainly they're not particularly rare in the US. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Only 428K were imported to the US, most of which were sticks. I think the automatics were less than 25%, maybe around 10-15%. Even then, this puts the figure of USA automatics at about 50-60K. |

The OP didn't mention anything about how many were imported to the US; he was asking how many automatics were produced.
I am curious about the overall percentage though. I wonder if those records are still around. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Yes, but automatics are so rare outside the US that any guess at the percentage based on US observations should not be applied to the total production. I expect that in Europe, the figure was more like 5%. So by excluding non-US production, I would arrive at a closer guess. |

And living close to our neighbors to the north, are you counting just US cars, or North American Production too? Canada's car were similarly spec'd to USA models, and they even got Notchbacks with FI and AT as possible combinations. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Guess the Germans never forgave us for WWII, and wouldn't offer the top of the line in the U.S. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

For that matter, they still don't offer us what we want that they offer others. Diesel Phaeton? GTD, GLD (GTI and GLI spec'd Diesel) Manual Trans Passat, the new Scirrocco. I could go on _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |
