Hello folks,
I live in the south bay area (santa clara valley) and need to source a front windshield for my 70 single cab. Anyone no of any places that I may be able to source one? planning on doing the install myself |

ISP west was the last place you could score type 2 glass without the tint strip that I knew of. They don't list it on their website anymore, but I scored one from them two years ago by calling direct.
I wouldn't do the windshield yourself. It's better when a pro glass shop breaks it and it's honestly not that expensive to pay to have it done. |

call some local auto glass shops and ask if they can get a PPW branded one. They make one that is a very light green tint, and one that has a blue band on the top. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I have got the lightly tinted no-band one of these through Speedy Glass, for under $100. Style FW201 _________________ John

The Fuyang/FYG windshield I put in a couple years ago has no tint strip across the top. I put it in myself (without cracking!) but swore that I'd never do another Bus windshield because it was such a PITA... |

Yes, compete PITA if somebody has done welding on rot under the windshield before, and made the aperture in the body smaller than it should be.
Took two tries, a cargo strap round the whole thing and a Spanish windlass (long loop of rope with a stick through it crosswise which you twist round and round ) from the front seat belt anchorage point to get enough pressure to push it in.
Pay a professional windshield fitter to do it. They are then obliged to succeed and liable if they break it... _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

I broke my first bus windshield...it broke so easily. One little press and crack! I couldn't believe it was that easy. To break.
I paid someone to put in the replacement windshield. _________________ ---------

Based upon the cost of just the glass versus glass plus installation, it's not worth doing yourself. |

Before saying "F this noise" and doing it myself, I called a couple of glass installers. Both said they could only get windshields with the (IMHO gawdawful) tint strip, neither sounded interested in installing glass they didn't sell me. I know I could have found someone -- Portland's a big city -- but I was tired of calling around at that point and just wanted to get the windshield in. |

Seems to me I read in the latter portion of Stuart's thread on Maisy that he'd sourced a clear 'shield for a good price. Could be mistaken though as I have tried to find it to no avail.
Get an old time glass guy to do it…so much easier IMHO and I like doing things myself _________________

Before you do it yourself remember, Google is your friend

LMFAO
A windshield is not difficult to install if you have a helper on the outside pressing, not pushing on the glass AND you spray Dawn Dish liquid Solution to lubricate and are not too aggressive with the rope. But even if you don't have a helper a Bus windshield is an easy install That’s why it’s cheap to pay someone else to do it. |

I've done about 3 of these, and have 3 more in the works. It's not that hard.
As for sourcing one, I keep saying, "Speedy Glass. FW 201. <$100." _________________ John

Both windshields I did were easy to install. Sometimes when you are restoring a bus in your shop you just do it yourself. My wife was inside pulling the cord and I was open handed slapping the glass outside. If it was an insurance claim by all means let the pros do it. _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

I was able to get a windshield through Safelite, however they were not able to install it. I just got the glass and had it installed somewhere else. |

Thanks folks, being the weekend my calls to the glass companies won't be returned until tomorrow. I popped the old windshield back in for now so I can drive it and will install a new one when I can.
FYI, that rope trick made it super easy to pop the windshield back in. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI
