The B+ wire going from the generator to the voltage regulator completely cooked the insulation off the wire. I replaced all the wires on the regulator and the B+ wire still got hot. I disconnected the wire as I was trying to get the idle working and the generator seems excessively hot. Any ideas or suggestions?

It is possible that the regulator is stuck open causing the gen to charge wide open. Could also be a short in the regulator. Open it up and look for any loose / broken pieces, or points that are welded closed.

This is one of the new style Voltage regulators, solid state and it is brand new. I have taken the generator off and going to have it rebuilt. If the wire going to the idiot light is grounded out will that cause the issue I am having?

Just a point to add, this is on a 1967 Dune Buggy. I have enclosed the voltage regulator in a plastic conduit box with the 5 wires coming out of the box. B+, DF, 61 going to the idiot light, power (red) wire going to the starter (Battery 12v) and the ground wire attaching to the bolt holding the generator plate to the fan shroud.

I have been dealing with the same issue . Voltage at battery read 17 volts at approximately 2000 RPM swapped out the voltage regulator and noe reads 13.5 at same RPM and all is good hope this helps ps this was with a brand new Bosch solid state regulator must have been bad out of the box
