I've flat towed mine with my Vanagon quite a bit. A few tips not covered by the other posters:
Your buggy is an open vehicle. Any time it is out of sight when you tow, check to make sure that some D-Bag hasn't put it in gear for you as it sits behind your rig while parked. It hasn't happened to me (yet!) but I know two people who towed their buggy after a stop and soon found (fortunately in a short distance) that the car had mysteriously found its way into gear while they were in a bathroom or restaurant.
Locking hitch pin and a lock on the hitch latch also prevents ill willed pranksters from helping you and your misery from appearing on the local news that night.
I wish we lived in a better world where such precautions are unnecessary, but we don't. |

Since sometimes I want to go somewhere faster then it legal for towing in CA, I use the truck rack.
That not me in the picture, it is someone else that most of you already know.

Internally transaxle is same whether IRS or SA, the just don't jump into gear, pulling IRS axles is a needles wast of energy, possibility of loosing parts and just more skinned knuckles.... I personally would not bother...
If everyting is luber properl (gear lube in transaxle and grease in IRS bearings)... Hook it up and go....
I would worry more about other "weird" drivers (the ones who want to get close to see what you are towing) on road and proper tow lights then anything else...

If its mechanically sound to drive then its mechanically sound to tow..
Flat tow all four on the ground.....with proper lights whether umbilical, clamp, or magnet style.
I've never had any car just jump into gear while towing.....
I have "heard" of scenarios where someone forgot to release the parking brake, or place the trans in neutral..... OR had a bad joke played on them... only hearsay though..
I tie a flag/ribbon on the top center of the steering wheel so I can spot it in the mirrors to indicate wheel direction or possible steering issues.
Lock the buggy to the tow bar/tow vehicle... and or cable lock it to a pole or tree ... just dont forget you locked it up...
One thing to note.. all the warnings about not backing up..
If you happen to get into a situation where you MUST back up.. have a capable person steer the buggy accordingly via its drivers seat while backing...... its really that simple..
No need to loose the girl friends, or wives.. over this.. ... unless thats the master plan...
IF you can ... make them happy..(good luck )......they may reciprocate..
Have a blast.. .. thats more important.
